How to make a sound mod

I am going to start sound modding pretty soon, and I did not find any tutorials about making a sound mod step by step. Fortunately, I have experience with modifying games, so I will compile a tutorial right here, right now, for any beginners to use. Hopefully it is detailed enough and understandable. If I missed any steps, or did something wrong, please say so, as it is my first time on these forums.

Step I: Get the BNK Editor

Step II: Get your BNK file that you want to edit ready.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/bnk2.png

Step III: With the BNK Editor, click "Open BNK..." and select the sound BNK for your vehicle.

Step IV: You will now have a directory of all of the .WAV's, which are a sound format commonly used for game sounds.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/bnk4.png

Step V: Now, press "Control A" to select all.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/bnk5.png

Step VI: Proceeding that, click "Extract Selection"

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/bnk6.png

Step VII: You will get a folder full of .WAV files, usually on your desktop, but may also appear in your BNK Editor folder.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/bnk7.png

Step VIII: You have a load of .WAV files, each with a name describing what sound they are.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/BNK8.png

Step IX: Look at each file name, and make a recording for that. For example, if you have 350Z_idle.wav then you need to record the idle noise. This can best be done with a portable sound recorder, and a real 350Z if you're aiming for realism.

You can eliminate this step if you are importing from another game, or if you have pre-made files.

Step X: Put the recordings in an easy place to locate, like the desktop. If they are not .WAV files, please do so with an external application. I reccomend Sony Sound Forge, or even Sony Vegas. Audacity can do the trick too.

In this case, I only recorded the idle noise.

Step XI: Now, in the BNK Editor, select the .WAV files corresponding to what you recorded. If I made my own 350Z idle noise, I would select the 350z_idle.wav in the BNK Editor.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/bnk11-1.png

Step XII: Now, click "Replace selected file..." to open up the finder.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/bnk12.png

Step XIII: As I have said, you should have put your custom .WAV in an easy place to remember. I put mine on my desktop, so I will select it.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/bnk13.png

Step XIV: Now, your BNK File is replaced, and hit "Save BNK".

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/BNK14.png

Step XV: Now all you have to do is put the BNK file to its respective Test Drive Unlimited directory.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd261/Buttlamo/bnk15.png

... and your done! If the sound does not come up right, you may need to fine tune it with an external application. But that is how you make a sound mod. Not so hard, right?

No Sound?

I did everything you said except i used modding tools to repack the bnk and when i try out the sound in game there is no sound at all. I used audacity and all i did was change the pitch of the sound to give it a deeper sound and the speed a little.

To be more specific i used the 350z sound from tdu and gave it a deeper pitch so it sounds more like a GTR (which was the sound i was modding).

Did you save it with the right format :

wav - Microsoft ADPCM 44khz 4bit mono

?

In audacity i went to edit>preferences>file formats and under Uncompressed formats i chose WAV (Microsoft 4bit IMA ADPCM) and then went to file>export as wav for each of the files and it still didnt work? Am i supposed to do something with the CarVSTConfig.xmb? If so how and what do i do?

No, you saved it as the wrong format. Look in the list of formats that Audacity offers, you will find the one that Djey mentioned.

Yea maybe. I downloaded a sound and guage mod that was originally made to replace the xj200 but my Gtr had replaced the r34 so i changed the sound names in the bnk files to the ones used in the r34 (ex. mclaren_onlow from f40_on_low) and started up the game and the sound didnt work! So then i experimented and brought the CarVSTConfig.xmb from the xj200 audio file into the r34 audio file and voila it worked!

Well, im trying to do my soundmod and i followed step by step this tuto (though I had no idea that there was a tutorial, I mean i made it exactly like that with trial and error) and my wav files look exactly the same than the original (with different sound of course) in properties : same format same kbps mono 44000 hz etc etc it is all the same! but i have no sound in game!!! what could be the problem? Can you check what I did wrong?

I really want to start creating sounds for the turboduck community, BUT I have a problem. No sound problem. I have it saved in the right format (I been modifying peoples sounds forever now). But when I decide to replace the files within tdu modding tools instead of bnk editor, I get no sound. So the format is right, BUT when I use the modding tools I get no sound. why? Im tired of truncated sounds from the bnk editor. it makes the job much harder and DESTROYS my loops.. Help anyone? And what can be used to make seamless - pop-less loops? I heard about Doppler, but I need some guidance. I have good samples, just need proper help. Thanks!

you should have 1.66 patch and tdumegapack to be sure that tdu modding tools works, use Audacity, click on File : Import (to get the file sound you want to modify), Export (to save the new modified sound, choose Microsoft ADPCM format), for Seamless Sounds : Copy & Paste the entire sound, to make it double, but the second new half to be Reversed (from Effects), other important effects in Audacity are : Bass & Treble, Compressor, Amplify

I think I've managed to explain you successfully in extremely few words the main actions in Audacity, good luck

hi i need a little help, ive added the "turbo hiss" sound mod in to the ford gt "on high.wav" and works great but for some reason i can only edit the "on" sounds and nothing else, ive tried to add a bov sound on the "off high" from a r34 sound, a bov from slrr, and one from a vid i have but nothing works everytime i edit the "off" sounds the car has no sound at all in game, same goes for the startup and idle.

is there anything im doin wrong cuz im doin the exact same i do to the "on" sounds, both sounds are all same format n everything, i dont get why on throttle works but off doesnt

using audacity to edit, and have both BNKeditor and TDUMT(main1)
