Ubisoft: No we don't want to wait 7 years for PS5

This has been one of the longest console cycles we’ve ever seen. It took six years for Nintendo to come out with a new system while Sony hasn’t produced new hardware in seven years. Microsoft hasn’t pulled back the curtain on its Xbox 360 successor, but it too is expected to launch this year.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot hopes the industry will be able to avoid another lengthy cycle this time around. Guillemot feels that new systems invite risks and creativity.

“No we don’t want to wait seven years for the next one. We will have cloud gaming that will improve over time, for sure. And we certainly have enough novelties for a few years. The consoles have taken a long time, we’ve been saying it for a long time. It’s really once those consoles come that we can let creative people more risk, and they feel they can take more risk because new consoles can be more open. They have so many features that they can play with. It’s easier to be a creative person with new consoles, because after four years of people using all the capacity, it’s harder to be innovative. With PS4, we will see new ideas and new ways to approach gamers. And that will excite consumers and excite creators.”

He adds that he believes the firm’s developers will be able to get the best out of PS4 faster than it did PS3, because the device is built on familiar PC architecture.

Talking more specifically about the PlayStation 4, Guillemot praised the system and indicated that Ubisoft will be able to produce “good things from the start.”

“PS4 is a great machine, we’ll be able to make things look fantastic. Because the teams are working hard on their projects, I think we will see good things from the start. Sure, in two years engineers will figure out how to do a lot more. But these machines are easier to build on than before, so we should be able to reach their potential quicker.”

If they weren't going to wait a long time for the next one I don't think they'd have included full-on game streaming and 4K support in the PS4 since most end-users won't have the TV and INternet connection to make use of that for a few years.

Plus even if they started on the PS5 right now what's to say it wouldn't take them another 5 years.

That said 5 years would be a much better cycle to keep up with PCs, assuming Microsoft doesn't kill the desktop PC with their weird Windows ideas.

6 years is more the given lifespan people would like to see, Sony's 10 year cycle is still on course as PS2 had one too. After all 10 year cycle simply means the system is supported for 10 years, so 3 years of PS3 support once PS4 is launched is certainly doable.
