Of course it is! It might have a ford badge, but they were Euro models. It's a good loophole :P

You see, Ford RS Team is actually british, but Ford Europe is german. Ford Escort RS Cosworth was built in Germany, but it was very popular in UK. So, what really defines a british car? Cars built in UK? Cars sold in UK? Cars that have euro models? Cars with the steering wheel on the wrong side? :lol:

I'd keep it simple: Ford is an American company. Full stop.

 

If we were to allow these certain Europe-only vehicles, it would get messy in here real quick. For examply, what to do with the first-gen Focus? Built by Ford of Europe and then Ford of North America changed it up a bit and started selling it a few years later. Now, what about the Europe-only RS version? Europe-only version of a worldwide car built by an European subsidiary of an American manufacturer. :p

I'll leave it to the theme setter to decide on that one. I know it's not intentional but I can see how a set theme isn't always set, we've seen that a couple of times recently alone. Therefore, from now on, the winner has to define their theme choice with a short paragraph if the theme is open to any kind of interpretation.

Well, tbh, although Ford is American the MK1 Escort is "mostly" British. Firstly I was okay with that, because I thought about it as a loophole, but seeing it has become a snowball about which division is from which country let's clear up things manufacturers that were conceived in the UK, no matter if they are now owned by any other company from whatever country (Caterham, Lotus, Jaguar, AM, Mini, TVR, MG, Land Rover, Rolls Royce, Bentley, McLaren... Am I missing something?). Btw, I named a few British brands on the beginning just to be clear which brands should be in. So... No Fords or anything tuned by the British division of that brand or independent tuner. Hope I was clear enough =D

I completely forgot about all the BS these comps come with.... how thoroughly disappointing.

 

PLEASE clarify the entry restrictions first rather then in hindsight.

 

Its already been said here that most entries here are not actually British, so I'm struggling not to feel singled out here

 

Although you're all forgetting that no one ever votes for me anyway :lol:

Ok, so, i'd like to give my view on this.

 

In my humble opinion, i believe that what is lacking is common sense. What is the real porpouse of these banner contests? It is to refresh the banner image. Period. It's not the competition, and it's not the theme, those two things are secondary, that we make for fun. If it's for fun, why take it so seriously and not with a grain of salt?

 

What we can't do though is pick in one theme, that is "seen" as complicated and not pick on another that "seens" easier. Every theme will have loopholes, every theme can be complex. We can't play with "2 weights, 2 measures" (Not sure if you guys heard this expression, but it means take 2 things that are the same, differently) Specially because we all may see and understand things differently. For some, Ford Europe can not be classified as british, for some, it can, but in fact now that a lot of cars are not built in their manufactor origin place. The point is, we must play this with common sense.

 

Let the person who picked the theme actually decide, even if you don't agree with his opinion about a Ford Europe being british or not. And if you don't really understand the theme and has to "play it safe", so be it. If you want to risk, go on too, but as said, it's taking a risk. And if your image is not accepted by the person who picked the theme, either you take another photo or if you can't be arsed, you drop off that round. It's not much of a big deal.

 

Either we start to take this with a grain of salt, or we will need to have themes with big texts, explaining what is and what is not allowed.

is't that the idea behind rule #1 "Stick to the implied theme (don't look for loopholes)" - we're looking for the best photo, not the best loophole.

 

Following the theme was a suggested list of manufacturers, not models, so it's reasonable to stick to that pattern.

 

Maybe we just need really specific themes like "orange RWD vehicles that are airborne with sunny weather and palm trees in the background" :)

You see, that's the thing. Theme says British Cars, not brands. :lol: Imo, it's easier to leave to the person who picked the theme to decide. You take your photo as you understood and it's fine.

 

Edit: Even that theme can be "complex".

 

Sunny weather for british people is different than sunny weather for people who live in tropical countries. Orange can be discussed, untill which point a shade of orange is acceptable and it doesn't turn red or yellow? Also, colorblind?

 

The point is, having a theme with a description is only necessary if people don't want to use their common sense. It is necessary when people forget that this is primarilly made for fun. The main reason is to pick a new banner, everything else is secondary.

Exactly, by doing I was trying to avoid this whole thing that we are pointlessly discussing right now. Of course every single car is not made in the country the brand is from. I drive a Mexican-built Ford, streets are flooded with brazilian VWs and Fiat, hell even the VW Amarok, sold in Germany is made in Argentina, Toyota builds its trucks in USA (The Tacoma)... So what's the point? By "cars" it's supposed to be "manufacturer" because if you ask anyone they will have no clue where the cars actually comes from or who owns said brand. I thought it was not difficult the examples made it clear...

I have updated the theme to be British Manufacturers as that is what the original intention was. Unfortunately it's too easy for people to make their own conclusions and that is of no fault to them, it's the way the mind works after all. We do however need to start being somewhat clearer on what the theme expects, so that we can stop having these back and forths.

 

And before anyone kicks off the whole 'Blah is owned by X', look at the little descriptor by mau below it.
