  1. Update 1.70 just went live for PS4 owners to download. Numerous new features and subtle enhancements are included, but the big news is the release of SHAREfactory The question to ask is, how many game devs will be forthcoming in adding their own branded 'themes' (Intro/Outro clips and transition effects) for use, and can you use these themes for other games. In any case, the tool does come with its own generic effects. Does this feature swing any potential Xbox One owners here?
  2. The Ultimate Driver Journey WMD member Halcyon is renowned for his video trailers, so much so that SMS have hired him as a member of staff to create further video productions. Combined with Dr Stephen Baysted's rendition of Lux Aeterna, this latest video gains 'official' status. The trailer also confirms a release date scheduled for November 2014. When it comes to next-gen visuals, world class physics, racing authenticity, career freedom, and variety of content, Project CARS remains the most anticipated and premier choice for race fans. Jump into the seat of a kart and forge a career with the aim of one day winning a prestigious 24hr race in a LM Prototype car, battle bumper-to-bumper for a third consecutive championship in the world of Touring, or simply take an exotic supercar out for a beautiful drive along the coast. Whatever your journey, Project CARS is your destination... MEDIA:
  3. How Big is 'Pretty Big'? Do you remember the first time you played Test Drive Unlimited all the way back in 2006/2007? How many times did you get lost early on? I wasn't too bad until I got myself into a long police chase which ended up becoming an off-road excursion... by the time I escaped I had absolutely no clue where I was. So no doubt you'd agree TDU1 had quite a large open world for its time. As you would recall, the Millionaire's Challenge required players to complete a lap around the island of O'ahu in under 60 minutes, with competent players able to complete the event in 45 minutes by averaging speeds above 250 kph (150 mph). What is interesting, however, is if you apply some turboduck maths, you can discover that the virtual version of O'ahu is much the same size as in reality. Or if that's too hard, you can always drive around the virtual island at the speed limit and compare the time it takes to what Google Maps suggests. But for the purposes of this article, let's assume that you can drive at an average speed 3 times faster in a supercar inside the game world compared to what the law allows in the real world. Figure 1 - aside from some discrepancies in the shape of the island, the size and scale are close to being 1:1. So nearly 8 years on from TDU1's launch on Xbox 360, let's have a look at what we know about the open world inside The Crew. Late last year, Creative Director Julian Gerighty made a few remarks regarding its size: A coast to coast race in the game, in a high-speed performance car, sticking to the roads is about an hour and a half, but if you want to go off-road, it’s about two hours and a half. We have one race, which is just for those maniacs, it’s not on the main path or anything. It goes around the circumference of the country and it’s a four hour race. WARNING: MATHS CONTENT If you ask Google Maps for directions from Los Angeles to the east coast, it will generally suggest a trip time of 39 hours. If we could drive that distance 3 times as fast, it would take 13 hours. So if the world in The Crew were a 1:1 scale with reality, then its 'coast to coast' race would logically also take ~ 13 hours. Since we know the game world is not to scale, and that the coast-to-coast race takes 1.5 hours, divide 13/1.5 to find the scale. Now we [think we] know that the real USA is 8.666666667x larger than the USA found in The Crew. VISUALISING THE SCALE Figure 2 - a satellite image of America (Google Maps) Figure 3 - an official illustration of the game world from The Crew. Figure 4 - overlaying the game world on top of the satellite image at roughly the same size. Visual discrepancies are much larger compared to O'ahu. Figure 5 - overlaying another copy of the game world image so that it appears scaled down as per the maths above. By now you can see how drastically the developers have had to scale down the USA for The Crew. Figure 6 - It's not all bad news though. Look how relatively large the scaled down map is compared to O'ahu. Figure 7 - in fact, it seems that we can fit O'ahu into the game world 43 times. Of course, all of this assumes our maths isn't floored. :) ONE SMALL PROBLEM Our calculations started off by using the number 39 as the number of hours needed to drive from Los Angeles to the east coast in real life. But have a closer look at Figure 4. The east coast in the game world appears to end near Tennessee on the satellite image. So perhaps the calculation should really be (27 hours/3)/1.5 = a scale factor of 6. So, what do you make of all this? Shall we just stick to saying the game world in The Crew is 'pretty big'? Or do you have your own ideas for calculating the scale. Let us know in the comments below. Don't forget to also visit the forums for more information on The Crew!
  4. What a sixpack! Slightly Mad Studios' Project CARS just keeps growing as Audi has just been announced to become the latest brand to join the community-assisted simulator! As many as six Audis are joining the game, including the latest rendition of their supercar: the 2013 R8 V10 Plus as well as its big brother, the 2013 R8 LMS Ultra GT3, which will challenge the recently announced Bentley amongst other GT3 racers. The 1989 90 IMSA GTO is a beast that could prove to be tough but rewarding to control and it will surely find its own fans. Le Mans heritage is not forgotten as included are both the 2002 R8 LMP900 and the 2011 R18 TDI LMP1, both of which have shown their domination at the track. Last but not least is my personal favourite, the small 2012 A1 Quattro - a 256hp version of Audi's tiny A1 which I'm really eager to test! All of these cars will surely be great fun to drive and they'll be hitting the tracks in Fall 2014 when Project CARS is released for the PS4, Xbox One, SteamOS, Wii U and of course PC. 5. The silence surrounding DRIVECLUB was never seen as a very bad sign as there was talk about it maybe being delayed due to being a showcase for Sony's Oculus Rift alike VR display system, which itself was rumoured to have been delayed too. At the end of last year we were treated to a few short clips of the game looking amazing and those of us in the UK got to see those clever little 4 idents which used them game and showed off some impressive visuals. Even as recent as a few days ago there was apparently a tweet made on the DRIVECLUB feed that showed a date of 9.4.14 which if you aren't from the USA know means the 9th April this year but was very quickly deleted. Now however IGN have spoken to Worldwide Studios executive Scott Rohde who has said that they will going "back to the drawing board and make sure the game is great before we ship it." Thanks - IGN
  6. To the track sir? WMDPortal has just posted the news that Bentley is being welcomed to Project CARS, the license will result in the inclusion of two of Bentley's more recent racing cars. The most well known of them being the strikingly beautiful 'Speed 8' Le Mans racer, with the other being a GT3 version of their luxury Grand Tourer, the Continental GT. A GT3 version of this car seems a bit strange to myself, but then again if it's stripped out and hard-prepped for the track it could actually be a lot of fun! Project CARS if you still don't know is coming out later in 2014 for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Wii U. Thanks - WMDPortal
  7. Lookout Below! Don't ask me what is arriving 'from the sky' or when we can expect it, but it probably wouldn't hurt to make the occasional glance upwards in-between focusing on the next corner exit. Before you jump onto the track, however, check out hybrid.art's new video trailer, embedded below for your convenience.
  8. Those of you with a PS4 may well be watching this game and for good reason too, now a number of us have seen the videos and screens of the game and they have been impressive in not only their visuals but the effects too. And now with this gameplay video from gameinformer, it just shows how amazing this game looks and plays, quite a feat when you consider that this is a launch window title! Seriously can't wait to see what the future brings!! Incredible job by the team at Sucker Punch! Warning: Slightly NSFW Language within
  9. Pure Raging A couple of new Raging Bulls are the next to join the NFS Rivals cops and racer ranks in this latest DLC for the EA arcade racer, called the 'Concept Lamborghini' the packs contain the (successful?) attempt of recent years to re-imagine the legendary Miura, resulting in the gorgeous Miura Concept. Snorting alongside is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo, a road-going version of the racing variant that participates in what is known as the 'World's Fastest One Make Series' the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo. Packs are available either separately as Cop or Racer with the former containing Pursuit liveries for the vehicles or a Complete Pack where you will get both packs for a discounted price. They should be available now on all relevant platforms so if you're still feeling the Need for Speed and want some new Lamborghini metal to go up against the recent Ferraris and Jaguars that were also released, then here and now is the time to do it! NFS Rivals: Lamborghini DLC Trailer Thanks - needforspeed.com
  10. The PS4 train continues to steam along and nothing appears to be in it's way as reports say that it's launch in it's home of Japan has passed the 320,000 sales marker in just two days! That's a big difference compared to it's bigger brother the PS3 which sold close to 90,000 (blu-ray issues constrained that though) on it's launch weekend. Japan was a bit of a worry for people to as they seem to be more aligned to smartphones and handhelds such as the Nintendo DS but if this shows us something it is that Japanese gamers still love them some home console gaming action. PS4 has more than likely now sold over 5.5million worldwide since it's launch in November 2013 and Sony has said that low stock will probably remain until at least April. The overstay of the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation certainly seems to have made people's hearts grow fonder for this new generation of console gaming and the sales are just going to continue to come, now all we need is the games!! Though with inFAMOUS Second Son and a rumoured VR device - that's on-par with the Oculus Rift - Sony certainly has a very cool gaming future ahead of it and so do its current and future PS4 owners. Thanks - News: Japanese PS4 sales hit 320k in 2 days, report claims - CVG UK
  11. Advertising Secrets Exposed! If you were expecting DRIVECLUB to finally arrive on PlayStation 4 on February 28 as previously suggested, now might be a good time to re-evaluate. That is unless of course Sony's marketing strategy is... not to market the title with only 2 weeks from launch. Official PlayStation Magazine Italy reckon that DRIVECLUB will not be available until as late as June 2014. That's quite a bump back from the original November 2013 launch date. That [nonexistent] marketing strategy is however unlikely following the distribution of an instructional branding guidelines video for contest-entrants that interestingly shows us what ploys are in effect to make their game trailers look visually realistic, such as the lack of colour saturation, or purposeful introduction of imperfections and amateurism. This makes one wonder if the marketing gameplay footage we've seen thus-far is truly representative of the final product or if some of these tricks are simply done in Final Cut Pro, for example. Have a look for yourself and let us know what you think below. At least we know (from the assets video below) that the game will sound good! DRIVECLUB Videos
  12. Carlsberg don't make Trailers... It seems that the crowd-funded project by Slightly Mad Studios Project Cars has been going on forever, in fact you could almost believe that Moses himself was playing the latest build when the burning bush pestered him to pay attention but alas we are here in 2014 and this looks to be the actual year when we will see the game actually released! Yeah I know how crazy is that? Those of you who have followed and are an active part of the games' development will know how it has progressed and continues to just surprise and make jaws drop with each passing phase and goal met by the development team. And with the recent move from the Xbox 360 and PS3 to their next-gen successors it's clearly evident that this game is going to be the looker of the bunch and will hopefully have the meat and not just be a pretty face. You can judge what you think yourself though with this *Jermemy Clarkson voice* astonishing trailer from WMDForum member JonZ, who if you don't know of, is very skilled at making trailers that result in you throwing money at your screen. Project CARS will be available for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam OS and Wii U (yes really) in the later part of 2014. For more info check out the the WMD website. Check out our Project Cars forum!
  13. Analyst group Baird Equity Research believes that Take-Two is hard at work on a new Read Dead Redemption along with GTA V for the next-gen twins and PC. It's probably no surprised that either of these was going to happen but it doesn't stop it being any more exciting, especially a next-gen RDR!! Thanks - VG247
  14. Saw this was posted on reddit via twitter and thought it was worth a post. DRIVECLUB could be coming quicker than we thought! There was already an inkling that it was close as there was rumblings that the game was going to be available for the Japanese launch of the PS4, which if you don't know is happening on February 22nd. The game will be available as a full-price title as well as being FREE to PSPlus Members via a 'PSPlus Edition', which is a slightly cut down version with less cars and tracks. Those people wanting the full experience though, can pay to upgrade to the complete version. Thanks reddit (PS4)
  15. All you have to do is: 1) be Australian 2) be 18 or older 3) vote for your favourite user-submitted commercial for Just Car Insurance ... or you could make and submit your own ad for a chance to win $10k, but that requires effort, so meh :p Check out the link below for the FULL details! http://www.justcarinsurancereeldeal.com.au/prizes?cmpid=JCI:GI:PI:CAR:DIS:20110701:078
  16. Click if the video doesn't show. PlayStation Access shows off 20 games for the PS4 in 2014. I'm getting rather excited.
  17. Any of you guys seen these yet? The DRIVECLUB one is very cool and shows the game off brilliantly! PlayStation has paired up with Channel 4 to deliver an exclusively tailored and engineered launch campaign starting November 22. KentLyons were asked to drive innovation within ad breaks and plant PS4 in the minds of viewers in the lead up to it's launch. To emphasise the pairing we created bespoke versions of Channel 4's iconic on-air marketing idents using gameplay from exclusive PS4 games Killzone Shadow Fall and DriveClub. KentLyons and 4Creative worked with the game developers (Guerilla Games & Evolution) to generate the idents from within the game-engines themselves. They will feature at the beginning and end of selected ad breaks from November 28. [media=vimeo]80618520[/media]
  18. If you've already run out of games to play and things to do on your new PS4 console and are a bit bored perhaps you may be interested in trying to take it apart and put it back together (which is not the craziest thing you could do)
  19. But we already know how to share PS4 games... ... well, maybe. But the American version of the PlayStation website has decided to post a more elaborate list of Frequently Asked Questions that addresses digital sharing, a subject that Microsoft is probably keenly interested in perusing. You can find the FAQ here. [headline]UPDATE - 1st November 2013[/headline] Sony USA have just shared this "Ultimate FAQ": PS4: The Ultimate FAQ PlayStation.Blog erm, what?
  20. Now that the console is out in the wild and the mandatory software updates have been installed we can finally see what the console is like to use: Post your thoughts and critiques below. Does this change anything as far as what you think about the console and chances of you buying one?
  21. The USA gets the PS4 tomorrow (well midnight) officially, but as is the norm these days some people have managed to get their hands on it earlier. Most of these people of course are playing and streaming their fun on twitch and sharing videos on facebook and youtube... then you have this guy, who decided the best way to play his brand new PS4 is to shoot it with .50 cal rifle. Each to their own I guess! :D
  22. With the PS4 launching in North America tomorrow and shortly afterwards in Europe at the end of the month, we get ourselves another very visually spectacular and yet ever so clever ad from Sony. The ad is flashy enough to bring in the casual observer, catch their eye and keep their interest, but at the same time it is littered with many past glories and cult favourites that any discerning PlayStation player will be happy to see and many perhaps hidden easter eggs that hint at the future. Examples like; a 'FireFly' logo that is from 'The Last of Us', a Cloud lookalike from the Final Fantasy series, Ryu being the Taxi driver and many more. In fact see how many you can spot, be warned though, you may show your age with some of them. ;) Enjoy.
  23. The BMW channel on youtube has posted this new trailer of DRIVECLUB featuring the upcoming 2 Series Coupe. Gorgeous visuals, female driver and kicking bass are the order of the day and shows that the delay could be one of the best things to happen to this game.
  24. Whack this URL into Google Translate if you don't sprechen Deutsch: http://www.computerbild.de/artikel/cbs-News-Playstation-4-7712087.html Have a look in the Gallery and scroll through what appears to be the 'Comments' posts for more info. 5400rpm HDD seems a little poor (maybe the benefits of 7200rpm aren't high enough compared to potential lifespan). At least we can replace it with a 2.5" SSD for a speed boost.
  25. So it appears the advertising for PlayStation 4 is going to be starting very shortly and our first real glimpse at it has been uploaded today via the official PlayStation youtube channel. It's a good ad and definitely does all that's needed to entice not only gamers but also the general public into taking notice of what the system offers. Only real issue I see is by delaying numerous titles, they've possibly killed their chances of sales in the 2013 holiday season. :cheeky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0d9d-cdxhk
