  1. The Thunder Returns February 18th is set to be a big day for fans of America's biggest spectator sport as NASCAR '14 The Game arrives on the Xbox 360, PS3 and for you PC users out there, Steam. Deep Silver and Eutechnyx are serving up yet another crack at the NASCAR gaming series, since EA Sports dropped the franchise rights in 2009. Eutechnyx has not had it easy trying to appease the NASCAR fan base, as the first two attempts in the gaming series served up many issues, including glitches and bugs long after launch; however the NASCAR fan base is a rock solid bunch, sticking with the games despite their issues as Eutechnyx worked hard to patch the issues. And so brings forth NASCAR '14, the aptly named third game in the series for the UK Developer. NASCAR '14 brings forth a slew of new features that were disappointingly missing from the previous editions of the game, including but not limited to: Online Racing Leagues, Server Browsers, DNF's, enhanced AI driving styles and difficulty levels, new car physics and the ability to hire staff and acquire sponsors in Career mode. Eutechnyx states that DLC will come out on a monthly basis for the game, including updating the game's "NASCAR Highlights" feature, which allows you to take the wheel of a specific driver, recreating epic moments from the real NASCAR season. Start your engines, NASCAR '14 arrives in 3 days on Xbox 360, PS3 and Steam for PC. 2. "The Best Circuit In The World" - Gerhard Berger Paddock Hill Bend, Druids Hairpin, Hawthorn Bend and Clearways, all names synonymous with one of Britains most famous race tracks. Brands Hatch, a 2.4 mile track in the Southern England county of Kent has been a popular staple of British and World motorsport at the location since the 1920's. Built in a natural amphetheater, the hills at Brands give the spectator an unrivalled viewing experience, sitting at the the top of the hill on the Brabham Straight give the spectator a clear view of almost all of the Brands Hatch Indy circuit. Into the trees continues the Grand Prix circuit, which has hosted the British Grand Prix and the European Grand Prix from 1964 to 1986, with British driver Nigel Mansell getting his first win at the track in the 1985 European Grand Prix. The track, immortalised in many a racing game has now come to Auto Club Revolution. With precision Laser Scanning, Eutechnyx have created a very faithful and accurate rendition of the legendary track. Below is the press release and a video from Eutechnyx. AUTO CLUB REVOLUTION ADDS BRANDS HATCH Free to play racing title uses laser scanning to add iconic British track October 10, 2013 - Auto Club Revolution, a free to play PC racing title developed and published by Eutechnyx, has announced the addition of the iconic British racing track, Brands Hatch. Referred to as “the best circuit in the world” by Formula 1 legend Gerhard Berger, Brands Hatch is the first track to be included in Auto Club Revolution which has been reproduced using laser scanning technology. Laser scanning entails a greater depth of data to be recorded, analyzed and recreated. Building on traditional forms of data collating, including CAD, satellite and telemetry data, laser scanning uses an advanced mapping system that creates a highly detailed, high resolution point cloud. This point cloud helps the 3D modelling team to pin point track height and depths but also the racing environment, showing the exact positions, depths and angles of curbs, paint, tree barriers and fences. This extra level of detail allows for a true recreation of the track, making it 100% accurate. “We are delighted to add the iconic and challenging Brands Hatch to our section of licensed tracks in Auto Club Revolution,” commented Mark Barton, Creative Manager at Eutechnyx. “By using laser scanning technology, we have been able to add a much greater level of detail to the track, giving our fans a realistic experience as possible through a free-to-play game.” Auto Club Revolution will feature 2 routes around Brands Hatch, with both the Grand Prix and Indy routes being open for racing from launch. This starts a campaign of regular updates for the game over the coming weeks and months, with additional cars and further tracks due for release. Auto Club Revolution is a free-to-play PC title. 3. Way To The Top Auto Club Revolution developers Eutechnyx have announced an update that changes how racers progress through the game. The full release with a Q&A can be seen below. Auto Club Revolution: Progression Update The multi-award winning online racing game Auto Club Revolution is undergoing a massive update to offer more flexibility and a deeper player experience. The Progression Update covers a wealth of improvements and new systems which will engage with racers on a new level. To explain the details of the update we ran a Q&A session with Christoph Vietzke, Executive Producer on Auto Club Revolution. Here’s what Christoph said: What is the Progression Update? ACR’s Progression Update is a more robust and balanced version of Auto Club Revolution. From looking at the free-to-play market and taking on board player feedback, we have implemented new systems to improve performance and stability into the racing environment. New progression systems have been introduced to enhance the player experience, making ACR a more engaging and competitive game. What does it mean to be a ‘Progression’ game? Previously a player could purchase any car or upgrade at any time, as long as they had the necessary credits or E-bucks. With the new progression system, a player must unlock cars and upgrades as they increase their rank. ACR is encouraging the player to progress through the game car by car making Auto Club Revolution into a driver journey. What are the benefits of the new system? Having cars unlocked by levelling up adds a more honest and free approach into the ACR experience. EXP points are earned by players participating and completing races, the more a player races, the more EXP they will earn. Earn enough EXP and a player ranks up, giving access to new cars and upgrades that will always be available for Credit purchases. As a player climbs the ranks they will be rewarded with access to better cars with higher levels of performance. Higher performance cars will also earn a player more EXP and credits per race, increasing the return of investment the player has made to unlock and own the car. What happens to a current player’s ranking? How does that cross over to the new system? A player’s rank will be transferred to the new system so they can continue on their progression paths. Are all cars available for purchase with Credits? 50+ cars (that’s almost 90%) are now available to purchase with credits, but they have to be unlocked in the showroom through ranking up. This includes five brand new cars that will be available for players to unlock (details on which cars these are will be revealed soon!). The remaining cars are available as Premium cars only, which are purchased via E-bucks. To be absolutely clear, the premium cars allow player’s access to higher level cars directly, but these cars will never be the strongest cars in the game. The most powerful cars in the game still have to be unlocked through proper competition; completing races and participating in events. This results in the game being fair to players that are willing to compete in and complete the racer journey in order to race the top cars of the world. What are Premium cars? Premium cars are a range of special pre-upgraded cars that will give the player an accelerated rate of rewards, earning them additional EXP and credits when used in a race. They cover a range of performances, but are not the best cars in the game. The benefit of Premium cars is that they will help to accelerate experience pay-outs and help a player achieve ranks quicker. What happens to cars which current players have purchased? Veteran players, or anyone who played the game before the implementation of the Progression Update, will still retain the cars they own and these will be exempt from the progression system. This will reward our existing community with a bonus for being part of our community so far. How are damage and repair models being implemented into ACR? New damage mechanics have been introduced in the Progression Update. This is something that the community has been asking for, for a long time. We now feel that the game has the right balance to fully integrate it into the game. Damage will only be active in competitive races (A.I. and Multiplayer) and will not affect single player practice races. During a race, a car can lose up to approximately 10% of its performance through damage. A car will never be damaged beyond a point at which the user could not complete the race. After the race, a damaged car will be unavailable to race again until repairs have been made. Repairs cost a small amount of Credits, corresponding to the amount of damage a car has taken. Unlike other games repairs happen instantly, meaning a player can race their favorite cars again quickly. The damage and repair system adds another dimension to the car racing experience Auto Club Revolution aims to be. How is the upgrade system going to work? Rather than being able to attribute a large number of upgrades to a car, we are making players take a more tactical approach by giving the player a choice of applying up to three upgrades. Each car has 14 different upgrades which can be applied to increase various elements of performance, but players can only use three of these at a time. Players can customize their load outs for specific tracks, offering a more tailored experience. There will also be two additional Premium slots available to purchase allowing for further customizations. Upgrades will count for approximately 15% of overall car performance, so it is down to the player to pick their upgrades carefully to suit their driving style and the tracks they are racing. How will rebalancing of car upgrades affect players? Stock cars (cars with no upgrades) have been re-valued to reflect their real-life counterparts more accurately; particularly, the tire grip of the stock cars has been improved resulting in a quality driving experience for each carinstead of only upgraded cars. All the other upgrades have been made to fit specific situations. Follow Auto Club Revolution on Twitter (@AutoClubRev) and Facebook to keep up to date with all Auto Club Revolution news.
  4. Computers? Driving Cars!? Eutechnyx, developers of Auto Club Revolution have released a second developer diary, this time highlighting their new AI system. AI, usually a large component of racing games, pits the player against a number of computer controlled players. Anything from the most basic of racing to complex manoeuvres can be simulated by computer controlled "Artificial Intelligence". The computer will scan the track for possible movements and will work out where the best place to put the car is. From simulating basic club level racing to massive motorsport events with the world's best drivers, AI lets anyone have a great challenge against anyone of their skill level. Below is the press release from Eutechnyx. The Auto Club Revolution development team at Eutechnyx has produced a new dev diary video which looks at the implementation of A.I. races and how they can challenge drivers of all stripes. Players can choose to race against A.I. opponents, adding an entirely new element to the single player experience. Check out the AI Developer Diary below, it gives a great insight to how AI works. 5. Wet 'n' Wild Auto Club Revolution developers Eutechnyx have released a Developer Diary explaining their newest addition to their game of Wet Weather. This introduces a factor that is usually absent from most racing games released recently despite it being something that racing game enthusiasts would love to see. The wet conditions as you can gather will bring in a whole new element to the cars and their handling in the need to control them and avoid 'slippy' areas of the track, which as you know in motorsport, is a common hazard in the real world. Players will be put to the test as they do their best to keep their cars on the track and not lose traction or end up in a huge spin after an unavoidable tank slapper, which you have to admit sounds damn fun! Below is a press release from Eutechnyx. With the continuing success of its free-to-play online racing game, Auto Club Revolution , Eutechnyx has released the first episode of their Developer Diary video series. The Auto Club Revolution production team including Christoph Vietzke, Executive Producer at Eutechnyx, explains what the Wet Road conditions has brought to the title, how it changes gameplay and what it offers players both new and old.
