  1. Playstation Firmware 2.70 - video info… 3 Apr If you’ve switched on your PS3 in the past 24 hours you will have most probably been greeted with a new firmware update. What makes this update so special is the inclusion of the ability to be able to voice/text chat with your friends during games. Check out the short tutorial video above to find out how to make the most the content within this update.
2. New info on the firmware updates for PS3 and PSP… 14 Oct No doubt you’re already aware of (and excited about) the latest firmware updates for PS3 and PSP. We’ve just had some information on both updates in from SCEE, so please click through to find out more and let us know what you think about all the new functionality. London, October 14, 2008 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced details of the next PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) and PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) system software updates, adding new features to both platforms to benefit consumers. The PS3 firmware update (v. 2.50) will include the implementation of advanced voice chat features for the PS3 official wireless headset, the ability to capture screenshots in-game with supporting titles in the future, and Trophy enhancements, among other new features. The PSP firmware update (v. 5.00) will add direct access to PlayStation®Store on PSP, enabling consumers to browse the store and download games whenever they’re at a Wi-Fi hotspot. Both system software updates will be released on 15th October. PLAYSTATION®3 Firmware 2.50 Update Building upon the foundation set by previous firmware upgrades, the 2.50 system software update will refine existing features while also adding new functionality. The update will deliver exclusive options to support the official wireless headset, as previously announced, such as an on-screen indicator that shows volume, battery charge, and mute functions, as well as a High Quality (HQ) mode, which utilises advanced wireless technologies and the Headset’s dual-microphone design to enable clear and wide-band wireless voice communication with PS3 system. HQ mode greatly improves the voice chat experience in multi-player titles such as Resistance 2, which launches in November. To further strengthen the gameplay experience on PS3, the firmware update will add an in-game screenshot capture tool, laying the groundwork for developers to add capture and sharing options to their games and allowing players to immortalise their favourite gaming moments and share them with friends. Titles that support the feature will be announced in the future. The 2.50 update will also enhance the user interface for PS3 Trophies. When players acquire a Trophy, the in-game notification will now include the specific Trophy icon created by the developer, while more intuitive options for comparing Trophies with friends have been added, including an icon to represent each Trophy level. The Trophy system will continue to expand through future firmware updates, catering to the PS3 community and the competitive nature of the more than 12 million registered PlayStation Network users worldwide. Other new features delivered through PS3 2.50 will include: • Video – Video scene search functionality will provide thumbnails to help you find a particular scene in a video more easily. • Information Board – The Information Board will be able to include direct links to PlayStation Store, making it easier for PS3 owners to download content that they read about on the Information Board. • Power save – PS3 owners will have the option to automatically shut-off their console or controllers after pre-selected periods of inactivity. • Flash 9 content becomes supported on the Internet Browser. PSP Firmware 5.00 Update The PSP Firmware 5.00 update will add direct PlayStation Store access to the system, eliminating the need for PSP to be connected to a PC or PS3 to download content. PSP owners will be able to download games, demos, trailers, and other game-related content anytime and anywhere that their PSP is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi. This functionality delivers on the portable promise of PSP, making the device even more compelling for gaming and entertainment on-the-go. Additional enhancements delivered through PSP 5.00 will include: • On-screen keyboard – A full-size, on-screen keyboard will be added to make text entry during Web browsing easier and more convenient. • Sleep timer – During music playback, a sleep timer will enable users to shut off their PSP after a specified amount of time. • Video-out – The PSP-2000’s video-out feature will be able to display PlayStation format software (classics titles) at the full-screen size of the TV that the PSP is connected to; the feature will also support interlace displays. 3. Firmware (v2.36) coming soon, (v2.40) to include trophies, in-game XMB + Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly. Source Is it just me or do the "Trophies" sound like PS's version of Acheivements/gamerscore??? Firmware v2.40 FAQ + Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations Hi again! It’s great to see the positive reaction to the unveiling of system software update v2.40. We can’t wait for you to finally go hands-on with XMB access in-game and the Trophy system – and it’s less than 2 days away. Not surprisingly, a number of you have posed questions both here and on other forums. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions. Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future? We are evaluating the opportunity to offer voice chat, but for this update, we wanted to focus on text messaging as the key priority for communications that our users have asked for. Can you use the web browser in game? No, you must exit the game before browsing the internet. Will In-Game XMB come up during playback of PS2 games, Blu-Ray discs, and DVDs? The XMB is an exclusive feature for PS3 game titles. Accessing the XMB during gameplay was the top request from our users, which we focused on for this update. However, we continually engage PS3 owners for feedback and will evaluate the opportunity to offer XMB access during movie playback in the future. Can we go to the display settings and change anything there in-game (resolution, input, etc)? No, you must exit the game before changing these settings. Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output? Yes, sound output changes are supported. Will we be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store while in-game? No, but you can view your downloads in progress. Will we be able to stream music (either via media server or USB drive) for custom soundtracks or is it relegated to music stored on the HDD? Currently only music stored on the HDD is accessible in games that support this feature. We’d also like to reiterate that Firmware v2.40 merely enables custom soundtracks. It’s up to developers to include this feature in upcoming games (or to patch existing ones). Does 2.4 enable cross game invites? Will it down the line? No, cross-game invites are not available in this system software update. We are evaluating opportunities to expand on the new features delivered in 2.40. Will trophies be mandatory for all games release here on out? We are working with developers to ensure that Trophies are supported across the board in the future. Where is each player’s trophy stat info held? I am going to upgrade my hard drive and I don’t know if the trophies will still be on my account if I earn some and then get a new hard drive. Trophies will be attached to users’ PSN ID. Trophy data needs to be synchronized to the online account on PSN to be transferred to the new PS3 system. Will the patch automatically allocate unlocked trophies according to your saved files or would you have to do it again? No, Trophies aren’t retroactive. Can we view PSN profiles/Trophies from a PC using a Web browser? Will there be an API for web developers to access the PSN data, so online profiles can be created? We’re evaluating these opportunities to expand where Trophies can be experienced. Can you only compare trophies with friends that are online? As long as a friend has a PSN account, you can compare trophies with them regardless of their online status. Is there a limit to how many trophies the devs can put set by Sony? There’s not a limit on number of trophies, but there’s a value assigned to each trophy. Developers must balance out the trophies that are available to stay within an overall value based on whether the game is considered large-scope or small-scope. Essentially, a user that has unlocked every trophy in one game would have the same level as a user that unlocked every trophy in another title, all titles (depending on scope) have the same overall impact on a users’ level. Will new games have a cool little icon on the back saying “trophy compatible?” We’re currently working on how Trophy support will be messaged to the consumer on our software packaging. When you get a trophy, does it make a noise? Currently, no. How quickly things can change - there *will* be a sound effect when you unlock a Trophy. What is Eric’s favorite cheese? Mozzarella Once again, we will continue to evaluate opportunities to enhance the PLAYSTATION 3’s system software throughout the console’s life cycle. Consumer feedback has contributed greatly to the contents of Firmware v2.40, and continues to be appreciated. Don’t forget, this Firmware will be available for download on July 2nd.
