Assetto Corsa Competizione: The Official Blancpain GT Series Game Revealed

Assetto Corsa Competizione

Kunos Simulazioni told us last week to watch out for today and the reason for that has been revealed, with the announcement of Assetto Corsa Competizione.

First off, this isn’t a sequel, so it’s not Assetto Corsa 2, it’s actually a more evolved spin-off, and the reason for this is that ACC is the official game of the Blancpain GT Series. A series that is incredible to watch, featuring popular Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, Audi, and other supercars, kitted out in GT3 racing guise, battling hard against one another, often at high speeds.

Only announced for a summer release on Steam Early Access right now, ACC looks like it might follow on in the same vein as the original. Although hopefully because of the popularity of Assetto Corsa, the take up will be so rapid that a console version will be announced shortly thereafter.

Wait... it’s not a sequel?

Looking at the announcement trailer it would be easy to believe that this could be a sequel, but it’s not, and even though it now uses Unreal Engine 4 which delivers vastly improved visuals and effects, has day to night transitions, weather, and will use motion capture technology to create new animations of drivers and the mechanics in order to produce an accurate sense of being a part of the race, this is still not a direct AC sequel.

Featuring an extraordinary level of simulation quality that allows players to experience the unique atmosphere of this GT3 Series, players can compete against official drivers, teams, cars and circuits with the highest level of accuracy and attention to detail.

In fact like the very start of the video says, this game is all about getting back to the core of racing, and as you would expect of a title being “official”, the drivers, teams, cars and circuits of the Blancpain series will feature. There will even be driver changes!

Motion capture technology is used to create the animations of mechanics and drivers in an even more realistic fashion and guarantee a high level of player engagement during races, pit stops and driver changes.

Racing real people?

Of course, in fact there will be an even better multiplayer portion to ACC including a driver ranking system like that found in iRacing and Gran Turismo Sport. Anything that inspires good clean fights up (or down) the grid together with fair competition, is fine by us!

All in all this is a direction many probably never saw coming for the next AC, but it won’t I suspect be an unwanted one, and we are only at the very beginning of learning all about it anyway, so let's see what further information comes out before we make up our minds.
