  1. How much has your replacement parts cost you so far (seats, rims, battery etc)? i'd like to have a rough indication how much it costs to keep the car running. Obviously $850 is peanuts, but how much more has it cost you so far, as well as in future?

Yep no worries, the thing is Tassie has a pretty rockin' car club scene, where we pretty much just trade parts.

I payed $110 for the battery

    Wheels were free (tyres included)

Seats I havn't bought yet, but I would think around $300-400 for a pair of good racing seats.

I am looking at a drivers side mirror which I would get for free.

A badge for the front for free.

Im getting some welding done on the right strut which would be around 200 I would think so.

To keep it running is pretty easy, just basic stuff like changing the oil, spark plugs etc just all those little things.

The thing is when you buy a old car (espeacially european) parts are a struggle to get, so if you have some friends that have the roughly the same car you can trade parts etc.

Im guessing your thinking of getting something like this?

If you are I would join a club or something, meet some people because you will be surprised how generous people are because all they won't is to see another classic car come back to life.

    thanks

  2. My dad had one of these back in the 70's :p

It was red and had the white Starsky and Hutch stripe running down the side.

Apparently it was a fast little car back when it was first launched, how is it running these days?

Yeah it runs really well, I replaced the battery so now it's starting first time every time.

AS far as engine plans go, ill pretty keen just to keep it standard for now, no major changes.

I'lll get the most important stuff done first then get stuck into the engine bay, maybe with some extractors or something along those lines.

Depending on how it is going I might get a paint job, we'll see how it goes.

    Thanks!

  3. Hey guys, so I bought my first car the other day and thought I would share it with you guys.

It's a 1974 Fiat 128 Sport coupe, the previous owner dropped a 1.5 Ragata engine and a 5 speed gearbox in it.

    Cost me $850AUD

I have some wheels on the way, planning on new racing seats, getting rid of the the very small amount of rust.

Please feel free to comment/give me some advice on where to go.

Since the photo's I have given it a solid wash and polished her up, it's looking very nice.

  4. Burn it, just burn it. I hate the people who designed and made the new "mini". It's not a mini at all. They should've just left the classic car alone.

    you my friend are correct.

this looks stupid, it has no soul like the older ones.

    silly silly bmw

  5. No not at all have i driven one, i cant. My father has a Commodore Wagon and that serves us brilliantly. I'm just saying that i don't really like that car. And your logic could be correct (that Euro cars=snobs). That first post was pretty blunt and i didn't explain it well.. i'm just saying that i'm entitled to my opinion and i just don't really like that car.

You've done a great job with your car and it was a great find. I just dont like the Commodore and the Falcon.

Sorry. That first post was pretty unexplained.

I must agree with you there, I mean they are a great car, practical etc. But there are just way to many on our roads.

And I must say it is in my opinion it is a bogan car.

  6. Wow that looks nice, its things like this that really do cement a love for cars. What did it for me was the 2000 NEC motorshow. TVR stand = me

yeah it is interesting that a couple of minutes can change the way you look at things differently for the rest of your life..

  7. Commodore's don't use astronomical amounts of fuel if you drive them wisely ;) my VX has pretty good economy, considering I like to thrash it around a bit haha great fun it is though :D

When I get some money I might even get a 4.2L stroker / super pack for it - then it really will fly xD

I guess your right. ahh I dunno, there's too many choices!! ha

There is a basic critera- manual, fairly quick, easy on the eye, 7,500$$ max and RWD preferably.

yeah one of best things about those cars, there is no shortage of parts!!

  8. Mate you really should go a modern-ish common car, and your best getting a holden or ford. I totally understand you wanting something out of the ordinary, and you should get that in due time but not as your first car.

When i was 18 i got a perfect condition magna through the family, which cost me 3 grand in maintenance in just one year, and then died i sold it for $100 to wreckers. Then i got a vt commodore wagon at 19 with 440,000kms and has been almost perfect the whole time.

It is still my main car and now has 494,000kms and is running as strong as ever even though i thrash it every single day at every corner and race off at every traffic light.

I wont be bothered getting another car until the engine dies but the engine has been bullet proof. And bullet proof is exactly what you want in a first car, then down the track if you happen to have extra money, go and buy an alpha or whatever as a second car.

I have a second car which is a perfect 1966 HR holden. But it truly is just a weekend car.

My girlfriend has a wonderful 1988 red e30 bmw, she bought it when she was 16, and we both love it, but the servicing and parts costs were astronomical, she grew sick of the bottomless pit of money and is now looking for a holden adventra because she is jealous of the low severing costs and reliability of my car.

By the time you're 18 you will have more money. and will earn a lot more when that time comes, so if you are working for a couple of years on a decent wage you will be able to get a car you really want. My next car will probably a renault clio sport or a v8 holden because i can now afford it

    hope that helps

hey, thanks yeah that did help alot. It's good to hear from an aus who has been there.

The only downside with commy's is the fuel consumption, but i'll look into them. Plus I'll probably end up a gum tree if I had that much power.

If you hear of anything sutible then let me know.

Ill get this weeks tarding post and have a good look!

    Thanks + rep

  9. Do you need the car for anything or is it just fun. If its fun go ahead with something cool, but if you need to realy on it getting a classic is a poor idea. Up to you in the end.

It would just be for fun the odd cruise up the coast. but more just running around town every now and then.

  10. But surely by fixing them, spending time on them will develop my knowledge of cars etc?

My dad was saying, that's all he did when he had his Chrylser Valiant, spent the whole time under the bonnet and he is glad he did do that because he has learnt so much..

I dunno ha, I still have awhile to decide..

    Thanks for all your help
