  1. The wraparound jacket band on the fifth volume of Yû Tachibana and Toshihiko Tsukiji's Kämpfer manga has announced that a new anime will air on the Japanese television station TBS in March of 2011. The jacket band's text does not specify if the new anime is a series or not. A "new Kämpfer project launch" had been announced at the TBS Anime Festa event in Tokyo in August. The official blog and Twitter account of the editorial staff at Media Factory's Monthly Comic Alive magazine had then revealed that details of the new project would be announced in the fifth manga volume. The booth of the companies involved in the project will present a promotional video at the Winter Comic Market event (December 29-31) at the Tokyo Big Sight event complex. Source:ANN
  2. The Nippon Academy-Sho Association, a Japanese group roughly comparable to America's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Oscars fame, has announced the recipients of the Awards of Excellence in the 34th Japan Academy Prizes in Tokyo on Friday. The awards honor excellence in motion pictures that premiered in 2010, and will be presented in a ceremony on February 18, 2011. Keiichi Hara and Asention's Colorful, Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Studio Ghibli's Karigurashi no Arrietty, Kôzô Kuzuha and Shinei Animation's Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Ningyo Daikaisen, Yasuichiro Yamamoto and TMS Entertainment's Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in The Sky, and Munehisa Sakai and Toei Animation's One Piece Film Strong World will all receive Awards of Excellence in the Animation category. These five films will next compete to be the sole winner of the Animation of the Year award. Grand Funk Inc. was also honored for its music in Yukihiko Tsutsumi's live-action film adaptation of Harold Sakuishi's Beck manga. Actress Riisa Naka (Zebraman: Zebra City no Gyakshū, animated and live-action The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) and actor Shōhei Miura (The Last Message: Umizaru) received nods in the New Actor category. The Chairman's Special Awards will honor five people in the film industry who passed away in the past year: director Umetsugu Inoue, actress Tanie Kitabayashi, art director Takeo Kimura, actor Keiju Kobayashi, and director Katsumi Nishikawa. The Animation of the Year category was created only four years ago; The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Tekkonkinkreet, Ponyo, and Summer Wars were the previous winners. Before that, Studio Ghibli won the overall Picture of the Year Award for Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Source:ANN

  14. The Tokyo-based software company Web Technology Com Corporation announced on Wednesday that it is developing an English-language version of ComiPo!, a program that allows users to create their own manga with pre-created 3D characters and settings. According to the company, even "people who can't draw" can create manga with this software, similar to the way that people who cannot necessarily sing can create vocal songs with the Vocaloid software tools. Web Technology Com plans to release the English version next spring. The Japanese version of the software was released on Wednesday in packaged and downloadable forms. Manga creator Keiichi Tanaka (Minori no Seishun, Doctor Chichibuyama) is currently the company's General Manager & Solution Sales Division, while Even A Monkey Can Draw Manga's Kentaro Takekuma consulted on the software's development. Character designer Kumi Horii (Seitokai no Ichizon, Zone of the Enders) created the built-in character models. These models, along with the backgrounds, are available in 3D, allowing the users to shift the angles of either when designing their manga's panels. Users can also customize Horii's designs with different hairstyles, hair color, eyes, expressions, clothing, and other features. A 17-year-old female character named Miho "Comipo-chan" Koishikawa gives advice to the users with the voice of Sayaka Nakaya (Usaru-san) from the female idol group AKB48. As leader of the "ComiPo! Supporters," Nakaya is recording the dialogue that will accompany a weekly one-panel manga starting in December. Source:ANN [smg id=211 type=av] [smg id=212 type=av]

  20. The full Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly approved the government's revised bill to amend the Youth Healthy Development Ordinance on Wednesday afternoon. The current ordinance already prevents the sale and renting of "harmful publications" — materials that are "sexually stimulating, encourages cruelty, and/or may compel suicide or criminal behavior" to people under the age of 18. Bill 156 would require the industry to also regulate "manga, anime , and other images (except for real-life photography)" that "unjustifiably glorify or exaggerate" certain sexual or pseudo sexual acts. Another section of the revised bill would allow the government to directly regulate the above images if the depicted acts are also "considered to be excessively disrupting of social order" such as rape. The assembly also approved a non-binding supplemental resolution urging newly designated harmful publications to be carefully regulated, with the work's merits based on artistic, social, and other criteria to be taken into account in the evaluation process. The voluntary self-regulation clauses will go into effect on April 1 of next year, and the restrictions on sales and renting will go into effect on July 1. Source:ANN
