  2. Sorry :p I know zip about Powershots :p

  3. Definitely, but only if you're willing to spend more money in the future. As you get better you'll expect and want better stuff, which those Powershots can't. You're stuck with that lens for life. So basically if you're willing and ok to spend more in the future, definitely pay more for the DSLR. Its just so much more versatile.

  4. Yes "Body Only" means its the camera, without the lens. You know you've got the whole thing when he lists "Body with kit (lens)," or any other lens he might include. Buying the body alone might not be a bad thing, the kit lens usually isn't very good anyway, and with the money you saved, you'd be able to get another lens that suits you better, like a telephoto, macro, wideangle et cetera ;) For Canon, the kit lens is usually a 18-55 which isn't bad, but there are better lenses available. They're decent to start of with though ;)

  5. No worries mate, best of luck with your hunt ;)

  6. Oh and excuse my breaking it down, 1000 character limit meant that i had to cut out unnecessary crap in the 2nd paragraph. T'was gonna post it from bottom up so you'd be able to read it as usual, rather than read the bottom paragraph, up then down, then moving your entire head 2 paragraphs up, then read back down et cetera.

  7. Ok for the Canon Eos range, the number of digits signify the "level" it is. The larger the number of digits, (like 1000D) the lower it is. The smaller the number (like 1D) the better it is. The 1D's a professional DSLR already, its not really for "consumers". There's 4 digits, 3, 2, and then 1. Within the "number of digits" range, the larger the number. the newer the model. 450D is older than 500D. Only exception is the Eos 5D and the Eos 1D. Going by my above analogy, the 5D should be better right? Nope, the 1D's better. But there are different 1Ds too, the Mk 1 and the Mk2. Its better that you do some research before buying ;) This is just a rough guide to the numbers in the model range. - Basically, less digits = higher in the range. (Civic 1.6 vs Type R). Larger the number within the "same number of digits range", the better/newer model it is. (Golf Mk 5 vs Golf Mk6)

  8. DSLR stands for "Digital Single Lens Reflex". Basically what it does is there is a penta-prism above the lens, hence the big bulge. This penta-prism reflects the light coming in to your eye (Its a little hard to show here) after its reflected 90degrees upwards by the mirror. This gives you a "what you see is what you get" image. You don't see a LCD screen inside the viewfinder that "shows" you what you potentially take a picture of. You see the image that the image sensor's gonna pick up. This allows you to focus better and compose your pictures better. Because no matter how high the resolution in the LCD screen your eyes peek at in the viewfinder, its not gonna be as clear or precise as seeing "real light". Anyway back to the reflecting of light, when you push the shutter down, the mirror flips up for a duration that you set (Shutter speed), light hit the sensor, which "takes the picture", after which, the mirror (shutter) flips back down, stopping any light from hitting the sensor.

  9. Shutter rating- Ok, the shutter moving up and down is a physical movement, hence the very macho shutter chk-chk (Yay! Chk-chk girl FTW). Anyway as you know nothing in the world lasts forever, so due to mechanical wear and tear the shutter might not work after that many shots. But don't worry, I've never seen someone hit that amount before because by then you'd probably have bought a new one as it takes ages to shoot to 100,000. So don't worry too much about it. Only thing, those who set the shutter to bursts, and just hold the shutter down, you might have to look out for that. Burst mode increases shutter count very rapidly.

  10. If you can overlook that then you're probably gonna get one FOR less.* Oh, performance wise a 2nd hand DSLR rarely has any issues. Just remember that most Canon shutters are rated at 100,000. Shutter count's probably the only thing that you'd have to look out for. And most honest sellers would tell you what's wrong and you can ponder whether you'd think that it's worth it or not.

  11. Get a Eos definitely if you can afford it. A 2nd base model (1000D) shouldn't be too expensive. I'd daresay that a brand new higher end Powershot might cost more. Just remember that 2nd hardware might have physical wear like scuffs or scratches. If you can overlook that then you're probably gonna get one or less. But having a DSLR might be costly in the long run. Lenses, battery grip, external flashes, filters et cetera might lead you to spend quite a bit more as you progress and improve and demand better.

  12. Check out the 430 Scuderia thread ;)
