  2. Cosworth wins FIA standard engine tender for 2010 Posted Dec 5th 2008 4:33PM by Damon Lavrinc Filed under: Motorsports Honda's departure from Formula One came down to a singular factor: cost. The amount of cash required to campaign a team (or two) in the top tier of open-wheel motorsports has been on an upwards trajectory for as long as we can remember, and combined with the current economic downturn, it was just a matter of time before a manufacturer questioned whether or not it was worth the expense. That's a tough pill for enthusiasts to swallow considering all the knowledge gleaned from F1 -- not to mention WRC. However, in an attempt to get costs in check, the FIA announced earlier this year that it would pursue a tender to supply an engine and transmission package to teams for the 2010 season and beyond. F1's governing body announced today that Cosworth has been tapped to provide the new "low-cost" drivetrain, that requires an up-front payment of 1.97 million Euros and then an additional 6.42 million Euros each season during the three-year contract. While 20+ million Euros might not seem like a bargain, it's a pittance compared to what automakers invest developing their own engine. If they opt out of the unbadged Cosworth engine, teams can use their own de-tuned version of the current 2.4-liter V8. Transmission choices are still up in the air, as Cosworth negotiates with Xtrac and Ricardo. For all the details, you can read Bernie Eccelstone's letter to the teams after the jump. PRESS RELEASE The announcement of Honda's intended withdrawal from Formula One has confirmed the FIA's longstanding concern that the cost of competing in the World Championship is unsustainable. In the FIA's view, the global economic downturn has only exacerbated an already critical situation. As the guardians of the sport, the FIA is committed to working with the commercial rights holder and the remaining members of FOTA to ensure that Formula One becomes financially sustainable. The FIA President has today sent the attached letter to all of the Formula One teams: Further to my letter of 18 November, we have completed the tendering process and are now in exclusive negotiations with Cosworth together with Xtrac and Ricardo Transmissions to supply a complete Formula One power train starting in 2010. The engine will be a current Formula One engine while the transmission will be state of the art Formula One and a joint effort by two companies which already supply transmissions to most of the grid. The cost to each team taking up this option will be an up front payment of €1.97 million Euros and then €6.42 million Euros per season for each of the three years of the supply contract. This price is based on four teams signing up and includes full technical support at all races and official tests, plus 30,000 km of testing. The annual cost will reduce if more teams take up the option, for example to €5.84 million Euro per team with eight teams. It will further reduce if less than 30,000 km of testing is required. Neither engine nor transmission will be badged. As suggested in my letter of 18 November, teams participating in the 2010 Championship would then have three options: The above. The right to build an engine themselves, identical to the above, having been supplied with all the necessary technical information. The right to continue to use their existing engine, with the current ban on development and requirement for engine parity still in place. Teams opting for one of the latter two options would nevertheless use the XR transmission. In combination with the programme of cost reductions for the chassis, race weekend and team home base outlined in my letter of 18 November, these arrangements have a number of advantages. These include: Enabling the independent teams to survive in the current difficult economic climate. Facilitating the replacement of a manufacturer team if we suffer additional losses. Stabilising Formula One while new road relevant technologies are introduced together with a state of the art high tech engine, which could be in Formula One as early as 2013 should the car industry by then be in a position to fund its development. Avoiding any change to the Formula One spectacle and keeping the technology at current levels. These arrangements are on the basis that at least four teams enter into contracts to use the power train described above, and do so no later than close of business on Thursday 11 December 2008. In the event of fewer than four teams signing up, the FIA may still proceed but the price on offer will vary. The supply contracts will be with Cosworth but in the first instance teams are requested to make their intentions known to my office. Yours sincerely, Max Mosley From Autoblog
  3. But if that is true, then why haven't they pulled the R8 out of the GT3??
  4. Extrem Snow Storm thread does that, but only Google Chrome seems to be able to handle it.
  5. Fizz is here iirc he is now known as Crying Cabbage. @Shadow the strip is the one next to the Nissan Dealer and where you can jump the hedge into the park/fire department depending on your direction. I've heard alot of stories but cant remmber them. The thing we liked doing (mainly with DIablo) is go there with us all in an exclusive car (F1 LM, Zonda Roadstar, Gallardo coupe and the Spyker) and let all the questions come.
  6. First Honda in F1 and now Audi in LMS. Shame to hear but they have dominated the series for so long, but with the R8 GT3 coming they can concentrate on that and continue with the A4 DTM, then come back in 2010 with the R15 and dominate again
  7. Heard this on Radio 1 earlier, its aq shame as I liked Honda just a shame about reliability issues etc. As you say I hope Jenson gets a new team, it would be a shame to see him leave the sport

  14. If you watch the ads you'll see that in one shot theres a man lying on one (supposedly) but the sofa looks like no ones on it, theres no shadow from actors on it and stuff like that.
  15. After readin your installation troubles and the length of time it took and it not running on high on high end comps then I think I'm gonna stick to the Xbox 360 version and spend the money that I would've bought the pc version with on the DLC.
  16. DFS adverts banned Wed Dec 03 11:56AM Three DFS television adverts have been banned - not because they are annoying but because the sofas featured in the adverts were made to look bigger than they actually are. The ads, which featured people miming to the Nickelback song ‘Rockstar', were declared misleading by the Advertising Standards Authority because the footage of actors singing was superimposed onto shots of sofas, making the furniture seem bigger than it was. The watchdog, which received 21 complaints, said: "We considered that the production technique used in the ad meant that some of the sofas did appear large in relation to the actors. Because DFS had not been able to demonstrate that the sofas featured in the ad were accurate reflections of the actual sofas, we concluded that the ad was misleading." DFS argued that customers visited their stores to examine items such as sofas before they bought them, and that any exaggeration in size would have caused widespread disappointment and large numbers of complaints to Trading Standards, which had not been the case. The three advertising codes breached by the DFS campaign were that adverts must not mislead the public, that they must not imply qualities beyond those normally provided, and that they must not use visual techniques or special effects to mislead.
  17. Get BBC iPlayer on your PS3! 3 Dec Oh yes! There is now a PS3 version of BBC iPlayer available for all UK owners. It’s all very simple, just go to the BBC iPlayer homepage to access the PS3 version. Now, as PS3 Fanboy points out, catching up with Merlin, Nevermind the Buzzcocks and Heroes has never been easier. Here’s to many nights of watching TV you missed yesterday because you were busy watching something from the day before! In all seriousness though, the iPlayer has only ever been held back by being only available on your computer, and now you have it on your TV. What could be better? from threespeech
  18. If they are finished, why not include them in the game instead of milking points out of us??? It does look very good tho but I'm sure they can't be the actual graphics tho, seem tooo good for the 360
  19. Shame its not next year but if it is to be taken in the way that they are concentrating on 2009 releases then they would be near the end of the development process so we should be hearing stuff from 2010 releases from E3, as you said Diablo.
  20. It would be a bit of a task but the only possible one. unless you can jack the car up in some way to get the door open
  21. What is the point of making a game fgr future pc's that are not available (or not available at a reasonable/sensible price). Especially when most people wont be playing it by the time them comps surface to the mainstream. Also why didn't they just polish it up a bit and release it rather than causing all this trouble for themselves???
  22. DiRT had multiplayer didnt it?? The online was a bit pants tho.
  23. looking at your specs sppedtouch I can't see how, my comp downstairs is ancient compared to them and it runs it fine. The only time its lagged for me was whenh we had a blizzard last night
