Favourite Music - Of The Week: Discussion
Speedtouch replied to Iced_Bullet's topic in General Discussion
I insist that you watch this. Its a trailor for Pendulum's new DVD (out 15th June) of their Brixton gig. I've got mine pre-ordered. And the whole of Granite: -
A couple of photos that I haven't taken recently, but have only just found a brilliant way to edit them so that they look like models :p http://i43.tinypic.com/1603h8k.jpg mod edit: Please don't post images over 350KB.

I thought I would post a couple photos I've taken over my period of study. I obviously haven't been taking that many, as I've been revising, but whatever. I've also just (today) ordered myself a new lens. A Sigma 17-70mm f2.8 which cost me £250. Should come either tomorrow or Wednesday.

Aww great to know someone still loves me :p Anyway people, yes I'm back. And I should have everything ready for a new PhOTW next week, having gone through quite a few changes to hopefully make it better. I just need a theme from Diablo thanks! Just remember to make it something that everyone can participate in! :p
-
I'm only 6ft. Its just that my cousin (who I'm standing next to) is damn small.
-
I believe an up to date photo of me is required to accompany my return. All of me and my lankiness.
-
Right people. PhOTW is going to take a break, for two reasons: 1) I need one. Exams in a week (not just for me, so we don't need this distracting everyone), and this simply doesn't help. 2) PhOTW needs one. Lets let people freshen up and calm down after two fairly bad weeks. I will tweak the rules when I get back to try and stop this from happening again, and whoever wins this vote chooses the next week's theme - they just have a few weeks to choose one. Whoever does win, can they please PM me the new theme whenever, then I will start PhOTW back up again when we're ready. I will also asked to be banned, this is purely to help with my studies, and also stops me from doing anything to PhOTW that may cause stress. Thats no arguing, no trying to start new weeks, no talking about themes or what comes under them. Just silence for now. I ask to just leave all the threads alone during this time of calm - and forget about it all, leaving no hard feelings, OK? Thanks, see you guys later, and good luck to anyone who has exams as well!

^ You use the phrase 'team up' wrongly here. Its more of a 'Fiat buys GM, who are royally buggered'.
-
^ Week 3 - I never forget. And also because it is clear you haven't taken that photo anytime recently, as you used it in Week 3. Your old photo will be entered as normal.
-
Mine start on the 11th May and end on the 15th June, but the majority are in the first two weeks  Thanks very much for the luck, and I must give mine out to everyone doing exams too, along with a bit of advice. Whether they're A Levels, GCSEs or SATS, try your best, and be proud of your results - there isn't much point in fretting over what you could have done - I realised that after doing just that with my GCSE results. Sure I could have done better, and there are people who have done and will get better results than me, but they were good enough to get back into the 6th form. Good luck everyone!

Car Spotting: What You Saw Recently!
Speedtouch replied to The Queen's topic in Automotive Discussion
I drove past 3 R8s today, in one trip. There must be something going on nearby. I passed one of them in a pretty narrow country lane - that thing is wiiiiiide :p -
Any more final entries? You have a day to get them in!

^ I would guess he didn't take the photos at midnight, but the drivers went out for a spin at midnight. -
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... It was going so well.

There really is a difference between 'Leaving for ever' and 'I'll be a bit gone for a bit' you know... As for my sightings - the usual X5s, Porsches, and a couple of Lambos, but the most fun I had was in the back of a Nissan Qashqai making jokes with 3 other mates (one driving as he's recently passed his test) about how middle class our area is, with the middle class two cars, and the middle class houses, and how I break that rule with the small and rubbish house and only one car XD -
^ Piece of advice - never ever squish a photo. Ever. :)
-
^ I didn't come up with the rule - copied it from somewhere - might have been PoTW, but I don't remember. The idea of it is that the winning picture is the best -irrelevant of how many wins they have in a row, that photo goes in the hall of fame. And that the rules state that though the winner can't choose the theme, they can choose the person who chooses the theme, which is who they thought took the best picture. I guess that the second place system could work, but there would be times when there is more than one second place, which would make things take longer and be more complicated - I have to get everyone to choose a common theme, as I'm not going the way of PTOTW (or the week it happened on PhOTW) and having more than one theme.
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vaDN0QEvyA Those two would work pretty well I think. Loving the blues-ness of the first post!
-
As I said in the Ford Fiesta 2009 thread - start with something small. You are likely to run out of talent earlier than you might think. I would choose something smaller and more modern that is easier to drive, and safer. And stuff like the Ford Ka has proven that they can be just as fun to drive as a BMW, which may only be fun at higher speeds. Not good.
-
^ As I [think] I said as Highline won the previous 2, and he voted for me, so I chose the theme this week. The rules state so, and work so one person can only choose one theme at a time.
-
^ We did - week 13 had no theme - RB26DETT chose that as his theme. I must agree with Koenigsegg here. If a theme is given to me which I feel would not allow enough people to enter (like a theme of 'Ferrari' for example), then I will go back to the person that chose it and ask them to change it (if only slightly) - but I won't change it for them. I do feel that the last two themes have been fairly simple, as stated above, you might live in a poorer town, but even so, there will be cars - not Ferraris, but just basic simple cars. And if you live in a rich town, then not everyone will own supercars - there will be people who just want something to take them from A to B. And the sky is everywhere, pointing a camera up while also taking a decent photo isn't hard. And yes, taking a photo to a theme is harder than having none. But thats the idea of PhOTW - to encourage creativity (along with the other photo topics) to make people better photographers. I am also tired of arguments over what fits the theme, but I feel that isn't due to the theme's complexity or nature. I think some people here (I won't name anybody, or say whether I've been arguing with them) face a bit of a lack of common sense. You, the photographer, must decide what fits the theme, but I feel the problems aren't because people have different opinions on what fits the theme; because the themes are all fairly well set out IMO - that is they aren't too vague and not too narrow minded. Two examples of complete opposite (and nasty) themes could be 'Atmosphere' and 'Ferraris'. Atmosphere could take in pretty much anything from the sky to a dark room, whereas Ferraris is quite limited. Another problem I have also constantly touched on is the fact of actually taking a photo to the theme. It is obvious when people simply go into their archives and choose out a photo which they took in their holidays last year or whatever. Its not creative, its not difficult, and most of the time it causes arguments because it doesn't fit the theme, as it wasn't taken with the theme in the mind of the photographer. I don't see having no theme as a way forward with PhOTW. If that happened, it would just become the Lens Flair - post your best photos thread, in which we decide on which is the best. We have a thread like that, its called the Lens Flair (and Post You Photos) thread(s). Those two are great for random photos without a theme, as people give feedback and opinions on how they could be improved - from which we learn. However PhOTW is designed to be the way of giving people something to take a photo of, then seeing how well they can adapt to that.
-
^ I do partly agree with you there. But Mellors' photo's subject is the wall (its what I see first), and the observation of distance is the background, giving the photo some depth and setting. And being able to see far away isn't the theme - the sky is. I wonder why I do this sometimes.
-
E: Long time posting means this is at your first post: I didn't no, but the idea of a theme is that it dictates the subject of the photo. In your photo, the subject is the wall, with the field as the close background, and the town as the far background. The sky isn't really part of the photo, other than physically. As I said, taking a photo including the sky is not properly following the theme. Using that sky to enhance the image is. Even what quite a lot of people have done and literally taking a photo of the sky is better too. Edit about your second post: As I say above, the image does not necessarily have to be of just the sky. However that doesn't mean it just has to include the sky. The sky has to be what makes the image, rather than the landscape or a different subject. Going over your list of people's photos, I would say that just Baldred's, (possibly Knuckles', but I'm not quite sure atm), yours and GTAMADDOG's need rethinking. imintheshower's, Car Freak's and mine all follow the basic same principles of partly or completely removing what would be the subject (the buildings) if it had been exposed, lighted or composed (or more reasons) differently. The sky takes over that role of being the subject.

My driving instructor has a 1.6TDCI Titanium, and its just a wonderful car to drive. The steering is very easy and precise, the clutch is nice and light, and very easy to control and the throttle has a nice little weighting to it. It pulls well and doesn't run out of power (like my parent's car does) - or at least I haven't found that limit yet, but I've only been up to 80 or so. Around town its wonderfully easy to creep along on the clutch (that is if your mum/you is a good driver who knows how to control a clutch properly) - its certainly a great first car. As far as the styling is concerned, its very good looking, and although I haven't used most of the stuff in the cabin (like the radio etc), its a lovely place to be. And one other comment I will make - as lucky as every other country in the world is when it comes to cars (that is, you don't have the problem of insurance costs to anally rape you) - getting anything (much) bigger than a supermini isn't a good idea for a first car. Not just the physical size problems you will face when squeezing through gaps or parking, the clutch and gearbox will be very heavy and much more clunky. You will also always be going too fast. That might not seem like a bad thing, but real life isn't like TDU - you will run out of talent a lot earlier than you may think, and if you don't have proper training (or don't grow up), you will be all over the place. My instructor says that he finds girls a lot easier to teach, because they don't come to their first lesson thinking they know it all and can handle anything at 100mph. The tree is much closer to being invincible than you are.
