Lol, but the D40 is a great dSLR to start with. But if you haven't yet, i would recomend to shoot with your present own, or your parents camera. Just play around a bit, and look on the internet for photograph-websites. You can get a lot on inspiration on websites like http://www.flickr.com .

My parents dont actually have a DSLR they have a Fuji that has no manual focus etc :(

I learnt quite a bit with my old Samsung L80, and still get praise for photos I took on that. All that a DSLR gives you is better photo quality, that is, higher resolution. Being a decent photographer involves being able to see a shot and use that to your advantage. Having a creative eye is key. But I would agree with Luuk on this one - don't spend your money on a DSLR yet thinking it will instantly make you good. It helps, but I found you can help yourself more by learning the basics with a standard PaS first.
