  1. Yeah I was thinking about how I might install it (hopefully I can run setup from inside DOS-BOX). If I get it working I'll let you know how, but probably won't try it until tomorrow. Otherwise you could try installing it in a Virtual PC if you have one (or perhaps you even have an old PC or laptop lying around that's 32-bit). [+] I've installed the game ok in DOS-BOX but the emulator seems to crash when I launch the game which is weird (since others have got it working, plus I've had success playing other DOS games such as Toonstruck in the emulator). I'll see if I've still got a Win95 Virtual PC floating around on one of my HDDs otherwise will look at the PSX version.
  2. Seconds before yesterday's storm hit us, lots of thunder + lightning and some hail:
  3. You forgot the insane mod, or do you fall into one of those other categories?
  4. Maybe but unlikely. I played all the old NFS games with a keyboard back in the day so that's how I plan on doing it again. For controllers you would have better chances using the PSX emulator rather than the DOS one (since DOS didn't really support controllers... it was hard enough just to get sound and VGA working in some games) ;)
  5. It's a shame the people who make the game aren't as good as the people who make the hype for the game :p If I'm honest some of the visuals looked good, sounds are always good, but I'm not getting this because I know gameplay will be ultimately flawed.
  6. Quick question: Would you prefer to order the games according to series (i.e all the NFS games, then Test Drive, etc), or would you prefer to go in order of year (roughly)? I've got a feeling the first TD came out before the first NFS btw, but just in case you want to keep the graphics improvements progressive rather than jumping all over the place.
  7. Nice screenies there Millena - yeah the older games were harder (that said I wasn't sure if they were actually harder or it was due to me being a lot younger and less skilled back then) :p You may use the DOS or PSX version (either way you probably need an emulator) ;) I'm still in the acquisition stage but should be able to start playing Friday evening hopefully.
  8. Looks like Lambo may make a TDU2 appearance after all. Good to see mate. :)
  9. Possibly depends on whether or not it's the SE version. AFAIK, the first version was DOS only, and then the SE version came out to work with Windows 95, and it also had 2 extra tracks, rewritten rally code, DirectX 2, and networking support. I don't know which version the PS1 copy compares to. IIRC the game had police chases too. :)
  10. Created the first thread here: http://forum.tdu-central.com/threads/26876-Retro-Gaming-1-The-Need-for-Speed-(Road-amp-Track)?p=439522#post439522 Let's get this retro party started :bparty:
  11. This will probably be one of the hardest games to find (search for 'The Need for Speed 1 SE full DOS'), but there is a free playable demo available here: Download The Need For Speed | DOS Games Archive To get this game working, you will probably need to install DOS-BOX, an emulator for DOS (which for all you n00bs, is the operating system we used before Windows came out). How to get the game working: Running The Need for Speed SE [NFS1] on Vista and XP - NFSCars Forums So, as part of the TDUCk retro gaming concept, we'll pretend that this game has just been released and share screenshots, videos, discussions, etc, etc.
  12. Does someone want to pick a new theme for this? Everyone's was awesome.
  13. Pirated copies of Windows often include malware that can cause weird issues like this or compromise your personal data. I suggest you go legit ASAP.
  14. When you say NFS Road Challenge Andai I assume you mean NFS4 High Stakes? ;)
  15. It was good at the start but getting a bit silly at the end.
  16. 4mph eh? Guess we live in 2 different cities then :p Inner CBD is 60kph, and for the most part that speed is easily achievable. Only during small parts of peak or if there's an accident will the traffic crawl. Nearing the end of the year when people start to take leave from work traffic will be even better.
  17. Day of the VW 2011 (last Sunday) http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j353/fatmir305/IMG_1127.jpg http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j353/fatmir305/IMG_1130.jpg Not my pics.
  18. I haven't actually watched this yet, but I'm told it's epic and hillarious. It's a spoof following Ken Block's first two Gymkhana videos:
  19. Indeed - I will need to find some of those myself though. By the time we're done TDU1 might be considered retro :p [+] Added a list of car games - if you've got more let me know.
  20. Every year without fail, EA release a new NFS game, and we all bang on about how much better the old games were (or something like that anyway) ;) Well, I propose that we stop talking about these old games and start playing them, and then talk about them even more and share pics and videos just like they were released last week. I'm open to ideas, but my suggestion was to have some sort of schedule for upcoming retro games we'd like to play, giving members enough time to try and find these games (I won't judge how you get them since they won't be at your nearest game shop, however don't discuss illegal acquisitions here). You might also find them on eBay or perhaps a specialist Retro gaming shop). Each game on the schedule could be focussed on for 2-4 weeks, during which time we'd start the career modes from scratch, share pics/videos, race online (where possible), share instructions on how to get the games working on modern PCs if necessary, etc. For those with not-so-great PCs, this could be a great chance to play with us too. Post your feedback and suggestions in this thread. We can then start new threads for each retro game we play (with a 'Retro Gaming' prefix in the thread title). For starters we'd probably play the early Need for Speed games, starting from 2 or 3 and going up to at least Porsche Unleashed. We'd probably stick with car/racing games first but then if you want you can re-explore other genre's afterwards. Let me know if you're seriously interested in participating and I'll form a list of names below. TDUCk members who own or can acquire retro racing games and would like to play them again: 1. Ryzza5 2. Clarence 3. Cow 4. Milli 5. Llama 6. Ozzmcom 7. Andreaz1 8. superhyper 9. Viltsua 10. TheXRacer 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. Suggested Retro Games Need for Speed series (before Underground) Test Drive series (before TDU) Midtown Madness series TOCA series (PSX/Emulator/PC) Gran Turismo 1 + 2 (PSX/Emulator) Ridge Racer Micro Machines Lego Racing Ignition Re-Volt Hot Wheels racing
  21. Hehe, I've nearly forgotten how to accelerate slowly in my car. It's funny when pulling away when the lights go green to look in the rear view mirror once you've reached the speed limit to see that the cars behind have barely moved 5 meters. I wonder what goes through their head when they see a normal looking Golf do a vanishing act :p
  22. Yeah, but I find that if I plant my foot on the go pedal I quickly forget. :)
  23. hmmmm tough one. I'd probably go for a 7.5 or 8. I've driven for 7 years now and have good car control, know how to respond to changing grip levels etc when cruising on mountain roads, have no issues parking (not that I've had to reverse parallel park much recently). I also drive a lot on motorways and in the city where I work. Due to circumstances it's been quite a while since I've driven a manual, but I did drive MT for my first 2-3 years behind the wheel so I should be able to pick it up again after stalling a few times :p I've not done any real life racing but in sim races I can usually hold my own, however there are others I've raced with who have an uncanny ability to take some corners quite a bit faster than me with not problems, whereas if I speed up I'll understeer off the track, but there's a lot of other variables there. As JC said, if you don't enjoy driving, then you're probably not very good at it. I love driving, so I assume the opposite is true. :)
