I haven't posted here in ages... and neither has anyone else apparently. Looks like most people moved on (until Solar Crown, maybe?) as nowhere apart from the TDU section seems to get many posts now. Anywho and way, just dropping in for a car update - possibly a long post once I get going.

Nice to see you again.  Congrats on the upgrade.   We're a bit more active on Discord (Chatbox 3.0) if you want to say hi.

The game has been crashing randomly since I installed the DLC2 patch, but it's not really been a big problem until the final Ibiza Tour race as it'll inevitably crash at some point into the race due to the long time it takes. Are there any pointers on how I could solve this? I'm on a GTX3080 with latest drivers, and I have the .dll that patches the map glitch installed.

Meet the next instalment in the TDU series, as some familiar faces tour Hong Kong Island, the Solar Hotel, and Street/Sharp Headquarters.

The game is reportedly feature complete (excluding post-launch content) and now expected to release early in 2024, avoiding a crowded release window with the likes of The Crew Motorfest and Forza Motorsport, and allowing more time to optimise and polish the game.

  4. Physics are arcade, not quite as refined as FH5, but certainly good enough for me to enjoy on a gamepad. Much better than TC2.  I heard others say that offroading and landing large jumps needed a little work. I guess we'll find out more during the next closed beta later this month.

And another TC2 content update feature track (route) creator, which I assume will also be a feature in TCM:

  5. I get the feeling those who've played previous FH games but not previous TC or TDU games will be more hyped.  TC fans will complain about the dramatic map size reduction, and TDU fans may also complain that O'ahu here bears little resemblance, being squished.  Then there's the high price tag, the grindy gameplay loops to afford overpriced vehicles, and constant push of MTX and season passes.

Underneath, however, there is a fun and beautiful game in a location with a nice balance of nostalgia and new exploration.  The physics so far look good, at least for the stock vehicles - I don't know how fully tuned vehicles will feel.  You'll find more discussion on Discord.  I know I'd like to play it, I'm just having a hard time stomaching the price, especially if they're likely to heavily discount the game like they have with TC2 over the years.

Time to revive this thread. And time to build a new PC!

The outgoing PC was built in 2012, with the GPU updated in 2015:

      Reveal hidden contents

    New parts:

    Spoiler

Case: Fractal Design Define R6 with USB Type C 3.1 Gen 2 front I/O

    Mobo: Gigabyte Aorus Master Z390

    CPU: Intel i9-9900K

Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 280mm AIO liquid cooler

RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3000MHz

GPU: Gigabyte nVidia Titan X (old)

    M.2: Samsung 970 EVO 2TB NVME

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 1TB (old)

HDD: 1x WD Black 2TB (old)*

    PSU: Same as old build

    * I've also purchased 2x 10TB HDDS to upgrade my NAS storage. I plan to move/remove a bunch of old stored files on the old HDDS and cease using them.

All parts are in hand besides the new CPU and M.2 SSD which should be delivered early next week. I'll probably wait for the next series of GPU's before upgrading that. At the moment I'm doing ok driving the 1440p 21:9 screen with the current GPU.

5 years on and whilst I would have preferred to wait one more CPU generation before upgrading, I've been running into a few problems that could benefit from reinstalling Windows (and hundreds of apps), so why not upgrade some hardware at the same time.  I've also been regularly hitting close to 100% CPU utilisation and over 80% of available RAM (32GB).

I will be reusing my case, PSU, fans, storage drives, and blu-ray drive, as well as keep the 4070 Ti that I purchased earlier this year.

As I use my PC for audio production (single-threaded, high clock speeds), video editing (multi-threaded), and gaming and also value power efficiency I have selected the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 CPU as it gets around 80-90% toward the top of different performance benchmarks and can be easily overclocked whilst costing less than the 7900X.  Motherboard selection came down to having the right mixture of USB ports and M.2 slots without wasting money on premium on-board audio that I'll never use. Asus haven't been in people's good books recently but this board was on sale, and Gigabyte have been hacked once or twice in recent years so downloading BIOS updates and drivers from their website presents a risk of sorts.   M.2 Gen 4 SSDs have been becoming more affordable recently so I picked up an extra 4TB on sale.  And for RAM I went for a G.Skill 64GB 6000 MT/s kit which uses preferred SK Hynix chips.

So for my own benefit 5 years from now, the PC build will look something like this:

Case:  Fractal Design Define R6 with Type C USB 3.1 Gen 2 Front IO (10gbps)

Mobo: Asus ROG Strix X670E-A Gaming with WiFi

    CPU:  AMD Ryzen 9 7900

Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 280mm AIO liquid cooler ($3 AM5 adapter purchased)

    RAM: 64GB G.Skill TRIDENT Z5 NEO RGB  DDR5-6000 CL30-40-40-96 1.4V  EXPO F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5NR

GPU: Gigabyte Nvidia RTX 470Ti 12GB

M.2 SSD #1: 4TB PNY CS2241 Gen 4x4 (~5GB/s read) - for operating system, games, programs, virtual instruments and other audio plugins.

M.2 SSD #2: 2TB Samsung EVO Plus 970 Gen 3x4 (~3GB/s read) - for audio production projects and export files

M.2 SSD #3: 2TB Samsung EVO Plus 970 Gen 3x4 (~3GB/s read) - for video production projects and export files and OBS gameplay recordings

SATA SSD #4: 8 TB Samsung 870 QVO (~0.5GB/s read) - I did use this for virtual instruments, games, and other downloads (basically anything that could be downloaded again since there was no way I was backing up this drive).  It's clear that this will become a bottleneck for modern games hence the new 4TB Gen 4 SSD.  I'm contemplating moving this drive to my HTPC for Plex movie/TV libraries so that I don't have to use the NAS as much (it's a bit noisy).

SATA SSD #5: 4TB Samsung 850 EVO (~0.5 GB/s read) - currently used for audio production projects and files and some GoPro and OBS videos. I'll probably keep using it for older GoPro and OBS clips. Older games that don't require the speed boost might also end up here.

Once the RAM arrives in the next day or two I should be good to start switching things over.

I'm Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

I didn't mention cheats of any kind.

It was just a normal feature ingame.

but maybe it was only for offline gameplay indeed. Don't remember if on normal servers it was working or not

No wories, I wasn't sure if you were referring to an external way of increasing the value of something before selling it back.

  8. Real life car accelerator/brake pedals are not exactly linear either.  Have you considered looking for pedal mods (custom springs, dampeners) that you can purchase to improve the feel?

You can press Ctrl+G in game (may require Hardcore mode) to show an overlay of inputs to verify if you have any deadzone or sensitivity issues.

You can also try recalibrating the controls in Windows or remap them in game, being sure you push down all the way.

  9. You need to install and connect to any VPN (you know the ones that most YouTube sponsors talk about) for one time when first using Platinum with an online profile.  Once you're in you can get rid of the VPN as you shouldn't need it again.  Pick something reputable with a free trial or no questions asked refund policy.  Connecting to Europe/Netherlands seems to work the best.

So I downloaded TDU Tools and got it running (had to use Google Translate in the program because everything is in Russian), BUT.....I think I'm just going to cut my losses. 🙃 I'm not fully familiar with third-party softwares to backup files or mess with any PC files, neither am I too annoyed that I can't 100% the single player campaign or own the ME-412 since I beat TDU1 on my 360 and have experienced those things already. Gives me another extra garage spot for something else lol. Unless the next patch randomly fixes the glitch, or it just disappears one day, I'm just going to enjoy the cars I got and keep my game files intact. Preciate the help though. 😉

Your savegame files are located in Documents\Test Drive Unlimited.  You can back them up and any time simply by copying and pasting the folder elsewhere.  It's recommended that you do this every so often, especially after progressing through the races.

If you switch to the Alfa Romeo GTV (F class) and save, then reinstall TDU and play it without any mods, you may be able to complete the race that was crashing for you.  After installing the game, go to the installation folder (i.e. C:\Games\Test Drive Unlimited) and make a backup copy of all of the files before installing any mods on top.  That way to can switch between vanilla and modded versions of the game at any time.  You can make as many duplicates of the installation folder as you like. You may need to copy the d3d9.dll file from Platinum into your vanilla folder so that you can log into your online profile.

hi so i have a buddy in the AU who's trying to play and did everything right, but stuck in the loading game screen and freezes.

    how do we fix that?

Use a VPN the first time you create an online profile.  I find connecting to a European country such as the Netherlands works well.

  12. GTR Revival teases AI race commentary

Ian Bell, CEO of Straight 4 Studios (and former CEO of Slightly Mad Studios, known for the Project CARS and Need for Speed Shift racing games), revealed in a tweet some innovative work using game event triggers (such as a player scoring a goal or crashing a racing car) to dynamically form prompts to generate relevant AI commentary or pit-crew advice, influenced by real-life voices.  The work is likely to be included in an upcoming racing simulation GTR Revival.

This first video explains the concept, how it works, and provides a demonstration.  The game featured below is said to be Automobilista 2, which uses the same Madness game engine as Project CARS 2.

This second video demonstrates a race by internal QA tester Austin Ogonoski speaking to a virtual pit crew member, an AI borrowing its voice from Ben Collins (Straight 4 Studios Handling consultant, also famous for his role as The Stig (BBC Top Gear) and a stunt driver in recent James Bond and Fast & Furious movies).

    Partial transcript from first video:

A method for spontaneously writing and reading aloud unique, contextually-accurate, non-repetitious, simulated "sports commentary" and "sports color-commentary" script, including but not limited to "analysis", "coaching", "tactics" and "assistance", inside sport or motorsport events or video games.

In other words, 'A fully AI-generated AI broadcast crew including a commentator and color-commentator inside a video game'

    How is this done?

    1. For starters, every action within the game world activates and associated line of code linked to that action, for example, there's a line of code activated when a player scores a goal, when a player makes a body-check in a hockey game, when the period ends in a hockey game, when the race is finished, things like that.
    2. This individual game action in code is then linked to a human-written writing prompt. For example, if a goal is scored, the writing prompt might say: "excitedly describe, as if you are a sports commentator, [player name] scoring a goal to win the hockey game against [team] in overtime."
    3. For step 3, that human written writing prompt is immediately sent to an AI text synthesis generator when that game code is triggered. So if a goal is scored in the game, that writing prompt is immediately sent to an AI.
    4. The AI text synthesis then follows the writing prompt instructions to generate unique lines of "sports commentary" text script in real-time, including but not limited to additional parameters such as player name and team name.   i.e. "What an incredible goal to win in overtime by number ninety seven, Connor McDavid!"
    5. That AI generated line of "sports commentary" script is then sent to AI voice synthesis... to be read aloud.
    6. A second AI text synthesis reads and/or interprets the unique line of "sports commentary" text script generated by the first AI text synthesis, and composes a unique "response" script, otherwise known as "color commentary"... from a different sounding voice.
    7. These steps are repeated throughout the duration of the game/match/session giving users the impression of a "commentary team talking back and forth" with each other.

It's interesting to see multiple layers of AI (text generation, conversational response, and speech synthesis) being used in video games, particularly the possibilities of assisting or coaching players.  Numerous sim-racing games support API extensibility which has allowed for community-created Pit Crew chief mods, which while not AI-based, increase immersion and allow visual HUD elements to be hidden.  This new AI-based system needs to do even better, without feeling cheap or over-done.

Whilst simulated commentary has existed in many sports-based video games such as FIFA for decades, I cannot think of any racing games that feature anything at a similar level (besides background repetitive commentary in games like GRID Legends).  Some larger organised racing leagues stream or record races with live human commentary but smaller groups may not have the time or resources for this so these might be interested in this endeavour.

One concern however is that a successful patent application may dissuade other studios from implementing similar features.

What do you think about the strides made by AI this year such as Chat GPT (language model) and Stable Diffusion (art generator)?   Are you happy to see them added to video games?  Do you have other ideas how they could be used in games?

Good evening, I allow myself to continue this topic, because yes (and sorry for English speakers), it was posted by a Francophone, Neanmois there are translators:/ ... So voila, I owned Tdu on Xbox and Tdu2 still on the same support but has different periods, (bought at the store obviously). Unfortunately I don't have them anymore, I found your great initiative to continue to bring this superb game to life ... But how do I get a PC version and be able to play at Tdu World? What alternative? Since this product is increasingly rare! A torrent link not necessarily reliable? A purchase through Kinguin platforms? Or others ... No one would a double for sale? Thank you and don't be too hard with people who do not use the same language! 😉

    le newbie 😛

According to Beefy, you can find any copy of TDU2 and use any shared CD Key, this means second-hand purchases will be ok if you can find any.  The only requirement is that you must not use a crack as this causes issues with online multiplayer.  I realise the game is hard to find but we do not allow members to link to pirated websites.   Some have had success looking for iso files on archive.org
