when you are friends with a person, yes it will be easier to locate them. to see if they are online, press M (default key for the map) and go to the top left of the screen. there will be 4 things, one of these will have a picture of a few people, if i can remember correctly. click on this twice, then go down to the bottom of the list. there will be two arrows, click the right arrow once, then it will say friends. click the image of the three people up top again, and the list will dissappear. leave it for a few seconds for it to refresh, and then it should come up with red dots, they will be your friends. if nored dots appear, then you either have no friends or there are none online. TO INVITE FRIEND REQUESTS: press 'F' in game, and it will come up with a list of people playing. press NUMPAD down (default key for menu down in this case) and then once you highlight the persons name you want to be friends with, press NUMPAD right, and go onto friends, and then press NUMPAD right again. they will either accept or decline to be your friend. hope this has helped, dont forget the REP button!
