  1. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer!! Yes the legendary series created by Namco Bandai has returned for yet another installment in the franchise, this time hopefully without the . This time Ridge Racer returns in the format of 'Driftopia' - a Free-to-Play title being developed by Bugbear Entertainment (FlatOut series). Judging on what the developers say, the game will be released for free on PC and PS3 in the second or third quarter of 2013. As always to support themselves, micro-transactions will be available in the game, players can assumedly purchase cars, upgrades and more with their own hard-earned cash. Ridge Racer has been around as long as the PlayStation itself, with other formats on the N64 and DS 'handheld' consoles and it has always been a massive success because of it's track variety and engaging gameplay. And now with it being brought to the world for free, even more people can enjoy the franchise that has never seemed to die. Let us know what you think in the comments.
  2. Maximum Multiplayer Mayhem Codemasters have released a new trailer depicting the multiplayer aspect of GRID 2 and you have to say it is looking decidedly mental! All about everything to do with the multiplayer side of the game as you would imagine we get glimpses of normal races, drifting and RaceNet which is like a social networking platform for the game. With it you can search for friends, follow others, show your ranking and upload videos of your escapades in the game. Many locations that have been seen before are shown but with the visual splendour of this game it's no bad thing and that is one thing GRID 2 has going for it, it's graphics. Just like the first it's a very pretty looking game, and if you thoroughly enjoyed the original GRID and spent many hours on then no doubt the sequel will be right up your street, alley, circuit.. well you get the idea. :) GRID 2 is out May 28th 2013 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
  3. Moving Day Assetto Corsa has released two videos showing some small but delectable teasers of the moving parts that the games vehicles will have. These include a Ferrari F40 that flutters it's pop-up head-lights at you and a Pagani Zonda R that opens, closes, opens and again closes itself to you. Sensational!
  4. A Modena Classic A few months back Ferrari was announced as coming to Assetto Corsa via a select few models, this started with the reveal of the 458 Italia as one of the five that would be coming to the game. The next to be shown is the absolutely legendary Ferrari F40, the last car to come from under Enzo Ferrari's watchful eye and the best Ferrari ever in many people's eyes. The mid-engined supercar from 1987 and made to celebrate 40 Years of Ferrari road cars was all about pure-driving pleasure and had none of the luxuries that you would expect from a supercar of it's price. In fact the car was all about being as light-weight as possible that even the paint was so thin you could see the carbon fibre weave underneath it! Housing a twin-turbocharged 2.9L V8 pushing 471bhp the car could hit 0-60mph in under 4 seconds and continue on to a top speed of 200mph which made it the fastest production car of the day. And now thanks to Assetto Corsa you too may be able to see what the fuss of this car was all about and finally get the chance to push this legend hard around a track.   5. Unreal Engine 4 has been shown in all it's glory in this Tech Demo named 'Infiltartor'. As per usual gorgeous visuals, lovely effects and a setting of soldiers + guns is the bread and butter of this demonstration. The next-generation of games are undoubtedly going to look very nice. A Video Tells a Thousand Screenshots Some have wondered if the drool-inducing screenshots regularly shared really were indicative of gameplay visuals, despite the game not actually having any photo mode yet. Screenshot master plm5 has put together this video that does a good job at answering these people. Note that due to recent experimental testing with various new anti-aliasing modes, there were stuttering issues in some shots. If you needed more excuses to update to the latest build and have a play, the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X and Mustang Shelby Boss have both been added this week.

Truly M Powering Simbin have announced that as part of their BMW Licensing that the iconic M3 E30 will be coming to it's RaceRoom Racing Experience Free-to-Play (f2p) simulation within the next two weeks, with a special "try for free" period during some "Easter weekend challenges". Anyone who has the tiniest amount of car enthusiasm will know about the M3, it's heritage and why it is so highly-regarded and loved. Not only that, the E30 is typically heralded as the best M3 ever so the prospect of getting to drive it is deeply thrilling! Simbin show the Futur3e Simbin have released a new promo-video for their fantastic free-to-play (f2p) racing title RaceRoom Racing Experience (R3E) which gives us a glimpse into the content coming in the next few months.   11. Racing all over the World! Codemasters has today released the latest trailer of GRID 2. The video is the first gameplay trailer and shows some of the new locations players will be able to race around, including Paris, Barcelona, California, Chicago and the Red Bull Ring circuit in Austria. Several cars are shown too but we'll leave you to pause through the clip and name them as there is so many and a few surprises too!   12. GT Racing in a GT Simbin has today announced their new licensing deal for R3E with Ford Motor Company and with it revealed the first car to come from it, the Ford GT GT1. There are more promised to come later and these will probably be more in line with the racing heritage rather than the road-going versions, however the prospect of the everyday type of Ford making it's way into the game at a future point could well be possible. Codemasters has announced the release date for the highly-anticipated GRID 2 which will be racing it's way to retailers in North America on May 28th and in Europe on May 31st for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Along with this there was also the mention of a GRID 2 Special Edition which is available for pre-order and features extra content that will be redeemable via Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and PC. In the UK the retailer GAME has Exclusivity over what's called the 'Brands Hatch Special Edition', this gives buyers access to 2 routes [layouts?] on the infamous Brands Hatch GP circuit as well as 2 new cars of the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 Special Edition and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT.   15. Houser Bros Dazzle With Secrecy Just like the usual proceedings of Rockstar, information about Grand Theft Auto 5 has been limited, to say the least. So far over a dozen screenshots and two trailers have been released over the course of not much but a year. Tight lipped as always, this should come as no surprise to those who have been long-time fans of the gaming franchise. To this date we know little of the plot, other than it involves money (which GTA game doesn't?) and it has not one, but three main characters. Ever a new spin put on an old favourite by the group over at Rockstar. It's an effective strategy, every time a single screenshot is released, the fans squeal with delight and start to deduce (much like Mr. Holmes himself) the great possibilities that this game could hold. From what we've seen thus far out of the screenshots and trailers, we can look forward to the very things that made Grand Theft Auto a household name. Planes and Jets make their return in the world of San Andreas and with the immense landscape that Rockstar has created, you're going to need them. We've also seen the return of bicycles, which were a popular favourite in the classic San Andreas, which still has a massive following. What we saw with GTA IV was a massive change in the landscape of what Grand Theft Auto had to offer us; we saw a new graphics engine, new physics, in fact the whole game was brand new. Long gone were the days of running over hookers or chainsawing someone in half during your stay in Vice City. The humility of the previous-gen games had shed it's shell and we stood staring at a much more serious, grown up Grand Theft Auto. GTA V seems to fix the problem that most gamers had with IV, it brings back some of the classic arcadey-ness that gamers loved from the previous gen, combining it with the best of what GTA IV had to offer. If this artwork and those to follow are any indication, the gaming industry will be alight when this game finally hits shelves sometime during Spring of this year. Will Rockstar make their usual decision of delaying their game to perfect it? Or will we actually be playing GTA V before E3 even arrives on our screens? Time will tell and until then, I'm sure the gaming community doesn't mind waiting for what will certainly be the Game of the Year. The Ultimate [Virtual?] Driving Machine A number of months ago Kunos Simulazioni announced their official partnership and licensing agreement with BMW AG that would see a variety of well known and legendary BMW's in the game. As per usual with BMW in games, the list is not going to take a lot of hard thinking to fill-in, and main stays of the marque such as the M3 feature prominently in many guises as well as the newer 1M and the love-it-or-hate-it Z4.   17. McLaren VS McLaren. FIGHT! Codemasters has released the first of a series of three videos which shows off some tasty driving of one of the cars you will find in the upcoming GRID 2 game. The fast and frantic live action video features two McLaren MP4-12C's battling [playing?] hard on the Brands Hatch Circuit. And driving these two delights is Chris Harris, who you may have seen on many videos test driving the best cars us mere mortals can only dream about, and Mat Jackson, the very talented and always great to watch British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) driver. The video is full of great sounds, fantastic power-slides and flames spitting out the exhaust set against the gorgeous lighting of an end of day sunset. We then get a brief clip of Harris being briefed by a Codemasters monkey who shows him the telemetry and tells him the ideal place to pull a pass. Harris also appears to be involved with the development and the handling of the game, why, we're not sure. “I’m thoroughly enjoying working on these videos for GRID 2, and adding a few pointers to help develop the handling on some of the key cars in the game. It’s a great opportunity to explore the ever-closer relationship between real driving and the virtual world” said Chris Harris. The first GRID game was a highly-regarded arcade racer praised for it's impressive visuals and crazy crash effects of which fans will be happy to know GRID 2 looks to continue and expand upon this even more. So if that's your sort of thing or you enjoyed the first game then this will clearly be on your radar for it's release coming in the Summer of this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. If you know your racing-sims then you will know of Simbin, from their earlier GTR games to the popular RACE series Simbin has always been regarded as one of the best at what they do and now they are putting their skill into a new 'Free-2-Race' title called RaceRoom Racing Experience or R3E for short. The game is currently in Closed-Beta testing however as you would expect Simbin continue to release info and media about the game on their Simbin Insider blog, the latest of these being the images shown below of some of the licensed and fictional vehicles that will be available for use in the game when it's released. Even though there is no demo as such, if you have STEAM then you can try out a 'teaser edition' that as you can imagine has limited content but is very much well worth a go if you like your virtual racing and want to see what R3E has to offer. Thanks to the people over at DrivingItalia.net we have a video of the very promising looking sim-racer Assetto Corsa that is being developed by Kunos Simulazioni, who you may or may not know are the team behind the highly-regarded netKar PRO and Ferrari Virtual Academy, so as you can imagine their 'simulation' prowess is very much respected in the racing-sim world and excitement for their latest offering is at a very high-level. In the video below you can see the ever mental Pagani Zonda R lapping the Monza track where it sticks to the tarmac remarkably well as it is known to, as let's not forget this car did the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife in an unbelievable 6mins 47secs. And it looks like this game will allow you to test your might with unpredictable snaps and the car doing it's best to show it can't be fully tamed. Just like a full-on racecar should be! As you can see it's shaping up very nicely and should be yet another fantastic addition to any sim-racers repertoire.   25. See the Next Top Model here! So you think you know all there is to know about building model cars for video games. You've seen models recycled in sequels, you are familiar with the various LODs used in competing games, and maybe have even borrowed a few models to mod into another game. All this knowledge then enables you to complain when cars end up being resold or when they don't appear as early or as accurate as we'd all like. Wouldn't you just love to have a chat with these developers and watch over their shoulder as they get these models game-ready? Well, that's not as impossible as it sounds. Over at the WMD forums all members with tool packs can view the Vehicles forum and browse through each sub-forum for every licensed car manufacturer. Inside you'll find a locked thread where staff post updates and screenshots for each milestone they hit as they work on building a car model. Then there is a discussion thread where you can ask the developers questions, share feedback, and point out any issues. There are also threads where members gather reference material in one place to help out further. Developers essentially report progress in the WMD forums as if we were their supervisors. So these locked threads where developers report progress; what's in them? I'm glad you asked. Below is a small selection of images from one such thread. You can see one of the developers building the 1980 Group 5 Ford Capri, including mechanical components often omitted in other racing games. The thread is locked simply to keep the staff posts grouped together instead of spread between all the other member posts; there is a separate discussion thread for each car model. And let's not forget about similar threads for other parts of the game. Witness the massive attention to detail to bring the Nordschleife to life, be astounded at updates to the weather system as they are previewed, tested and released, discuss future multiplayer features (and race online with) Senior Producer Andy Garton, watch early pit screw animations, contribute to the grid girls references thread, and have fun in general trying to shape one of the best up-and-coming racing titles with like-minded people from around the world.
