Tutorial: Enabling extra emoticons on iPhone/iPod Touch

As a few of you know I'm a bit of an Apple nerd, won't lie. For the most part I don't bore you all with my accumulated knowledge as none of you have any need for it. This however might be an interesting gimmick for anyone with an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Ever been on the App Store and seen people posting reviews with loads of random emoticons in that you can't get? This is how.

What I'm going to show you is how to enable the Japnaese "Emoji" character palette. These emoticons are built into the iPhone/iPod Touch but are usually not available to those of us in the western world.

This glitch can be performed on any standard iPhone/iPod Touch with firmware version 2.2 or above. Those of you with Jailbroken devices probably already have access to these characters, if you don't you can try this method although I cannot guarantee that it will work.

1. Go to the App Store and search for; Spell Number. Download and install this App to your iPhone/iPod Touch.

2. Launch Spell Number

3. Now enter the following number 91929394.59 (those of you on pre 3.0 firmware may find this doesn't work, if so try: 9876543.21)

4. With the above entered simply press the home button. Now enter the Settings menu from your home screen.

5. Select General

6. Now select International

7. Now select Keyboards

8. Scroll down to Japanese and tap to enter the Japanese Menu.

9. Thanks to Spell Number we now have a Emoji option. Move the slider to the On position.

10. Back out of Settings and head over to any application with text input, I selected Notes as an example. Tap the screen to bring up the text entry Palette. To the left of the space bar you should see a new icon, circled below. Tap it to access the new menu.

Here you should have pages and pages of random icons and smileys for you to use. Remember everyone who has an iPhone/iPod Touch can see these icons as they are built in. This glitch just allows you to type them.

Once you're done you don't need to keep Spell Number, so feel free to delete it.

These should be viewable to anyone with a PC/Mac also.

Any queries just ask.

Enjoy. :)

And Emoji isn't a glitch.

Emoji itself is not a glitch no. But getting it use able on devices outside of Japan requires you to do this.

Jailbreaking is lovely, but my phone goes every where with me daily. If I break any aspect of it and it's jailbroken my insurance doesn't cover me. I'm not up for paying £300 for a new one. Besides Jailbreaking is currently stuck as of 3.1 as no body has managed to crack it, thus meaning you are yet to be able to fully use the certain features such as MMS.

There are a lot of really neat apps out there on Cydia. I'm not against Jailbreaking at all, just stating why I personally stood clear of it.

Ah I'm going by 3GS... I really don't get heavily involved in the Jailbreak world. As I can't on my iPhone for insurance purposes (its going to break, trust me). I could Jailbreak my iPod Touch but.. I can't be bothered tbh.. it plays music, job fulfilled.

I'm not here for a discussion about the benefits of jailbreaking, this was directed at those who haven't.
