HOW-TO: http://gumballtech.com/2009/10/11/ho...running-3-1-2/

VIDEO:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST7w9VsnKEg&fmt=22

"*This video shows you how to jailbreak and iPhone or iPod Touch that is running the new 3.1.2 firmware. The video shows it being done on a 16GB iPhone 3G. The jailbreak program is running on Windows 7 x64 from a MacBook Pro via Boot Camp.*

@geohot has released his jailbreak. It jailbreaks all iDevices running 3.1.2 (including the 3GS & iPod Touch 3G). BUT, just for the Touch 3G, it's tethered. It still jailbreaks the same as all other devices, which is as easy as running the app, and clicking on one button.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS HERE: http://gumballtech.com/2009/10/11/ho...running-3-1-2/

It requires Windows with iTunes installed. There is no Mac version yet. If you are on a Mac, as I am, just install Windows via Boot Camp (you should anyway) and use it there.

Apple filed comments opposing this exemption and indicating that they do consider jailbreaking to be a violation of copyright (and by implication prosecutable under the DMCA). A ruling on this proposed exemption has not yet been made, but a decision is expected sometime later in 2009.

It is for Apple, so respect the people's work. ;)

That's still not the point. It's not illegal. Even if it was, I'd still jailbreak. The iPhone OS is a piece of rubbish unless jailbroken.

So why did you bought it then. I would never buy it when there are all the Nokias and Sony Ericssons that you can put all your stuff on. If you've bought it just for jailbraking, then I feel sorry for people like you. ;)

Oh well, I'm not gonna compete with you to see who's right or wrong. Lets let higher authority decide.

Oh, swearing is strictly against the rules, even if its asterisks or random symbols ;)

Uh, hello, the apps? There's no other platform like it. Jailbreaking makes things more open and better. Don't see why Apple is so uptight about it.

Because you modify their product. It's illegal for them and you should respect them and their opinion, as you use their product. Don't be so egoistic and face that other people make their living on making those phones.

Are you retarded?

It's not illegal, and never will be.

Apple don't like people doing it and the only risk you face is that it voids warranty.

You don't even own an iPhone so how would you know?

Jailbreaking is NOT illegal. Let's just clear this up. Jailbreaking is against Apple's EULA, but not against the law.

Apple are uptight about it for a handful of reasons. The first and main being provider lock ins such as that with AT&T and previously O2 here in the UK. Another reason is that Apple do not want their device used for means other than those they have allowed. This also links in with new features, Apple are introducing new features across the lifetime of the iPhone and don't want Jailbroken phones to feature abilities not yet on the standard phone.

For the people who Jailbreak they win, they have access to some of the best iPhone apps. Those who don't Jailbreak also win, in the sense that Apple has to keep the updates to functionality coming in order to satisfy those who don't want to Jailbreak for whatever reason.

It's competition, and that... is a very good thing.

Is software modification within the rules of this board? Less likely. People who Jailbreak do so because they want to, not because they stumbled across it by chance on a TDU forum. There is barely a tech blog, site, news group etc out there which doesn't cover jailbreaking.

Without jail breaking apple would eventually stop adding new updates. they have to improve the iPhone OS otherwise everyone would just jailbreak eventually, if that happened the contract between o2 and at&t would be pointless...

I agree. My touch has been jailbroken ever since the 2G jailbreak came out, and without, I don't know how I could continue to use it. The only saving grace for the stock firmware is the App Store, but even that lacks in comparison to Cydia. I actually find it rather humourous that a number of the new features of 3.0 were copies of some of the more popular Cydia apps. I wonder how long before we get AutumnBoard... :p
