Modding tools V1.10 Vs 1.12 question..

Hey guys, i have a slight problem hoping one ( or more ) of you can help me out.. I did email djey about this but i dont know if he even got the email...

I'm trying to change the names of a few modded cars but I'm running into a problem..

I had an old copy of modding tools ( i think V1.07 ) then saw that V1.10 could edit names. So i grabbed that and all seemed fine, i changed the name of the Caterham to Ariel Atom and it worked great.

I then wanted to change the dodge super bee to the dodge RT. But superbee wasn't in the list on V1.10 ( plus a few others ) then i saw djeys thread saying he was continuing with the project on another site, so i followed the link and got mod tools V1.12, which got rid of the name editor and it says use the vehicle editor instead for car naming. Now heres the problem i encountered....

All i can seem to do when trying to change the brand/model name, on the data sheet is swap the name for another one thats already in the list, so for example.....

I can change : dodge charger super bee to : dodge charger vanquish ( because vanquish is already in the list )

But i cant change it to : dodge charger batmobile ( because batmobile is a custom name ) which i could do with the old names editor. The new one only lets me use names/ models already in the list not actually edit one of them to something new.

So is there a way i can edit true custom names in the new vehicle editor, like i could in the older names editor, either by editing directly within the vehicle editor or by exporting the names list ( i think the car physics file ) and manually editing it there, to either add a new word in the list or change an old one...

Also i saw Dredgy has that performance mod V2 which has a name editor. would that work? i honestly dont know much about all this, so I'm looking for the easiest way to make it work.

So in short.. The old names editor let me make custom names ( but not all cars are listed ) and the newer vehicle editor has all the vehicles ( but will only let me swap one name for another existing name )

Any help you can throw my way on this will be greatly received

Cheers - Nobby

ahh ok dJey i didn't realise i couldn't accept PM's

I tried Dredgy's performance editor, but i had REALLY bad results ( whatever happened killed my game )

all i did was change the name of the GT500. i kept "SHELBY- GT500 " but as the model version i added ELENOR ( as id swapped the original for the gone in 60 seconds car ) saved the files ( yes both save buttons :) ) and thought ill look in "modding tools " to see if it updated there before loading the game.

As soon as i tried loading the data sheet for the car , modding tools threw up an error, which surprised me. but i thought it might have just been in that and the game would be ok. so i loaded the game anyway.. As soon as it gets past the intro movies, it bombs back to windows :( Not good..

So i thought ive screwed up the car database files.. i had a backup still. so i replaced the car physics and brands files with which should have reverted all my car names back to original. but it still did the same thing. its as if its over written somehting else other than those 2 files, or id accidentally saved to my backup files somehow...

So now i have a dead game, looks like ill have to re-install the game and remod all my cars.

Just as a side note, would it have damaged the file because the gt500 only has 2 names not 3? what i mean is its listed as Shelby, GT500,N/A in modding tools. it doesnt actually have a 3rd part to its name. Or can you just change those blank ( or N/A) entries just like any other entry ??

TDUPE ONLY affects those 2 files. I just tried the exact same test (Renaming Shelby GT500 to GT500 Elenor) with no problem whatsoever, by changing the N/A name to Elenor.

To avoid a drastic reinstall, download the community patch 1.67d (a requirement for TDUPE) and copy over all the files in the DB and DB_LANGUE folders.

Another thing to do is check your TDUPE settings. Open TDUPE and go to "Settings->Locality" and make sure US is set, cause it could've been set to something else and overwritten the other language file.

And on a side note, are you running XP? Cause every bug report I've had like this stems from XP.

thanks for the quick responses guys. I am such a dildo lol i totally hadn't installed the community patch, which is probably what caused this. And in answer to the questions dredgy yeah settings is fine i sorted that out right away and no i'm running vista SP2.

Altho one thing i did notice.. in your guide it said if the game wasn't installed in the standard C:\...... then look for that line in the config file and change it to whatever the install location is. That line wasn't in my config... I saw where it was supposed to go, but there was no C:\... in the config at all. but i added my install path and it read the files anyway coz i saw the custom entry for Ariel Atom in place of caterham. just thought id mention that..

Anyway cheers again guys ill add the patch and hopefully that will make things work again. *crosses fingers and prays to the good lord of bacon*:)

Just wanted to report. everything is working perfect now. thanks dredgy, Djey and carfreak for your help. all the probs i had were due to the fact i wasn't using the community patch. as soon as i installed that everything worked perfect. i know have a gt500 Elenore and an ariel atom YAY! and they show up in both the performance editor and in modding tools, so thats cool. again thanks guys.
