The 6850 is a really good card, I have a sapphire 6850. Amazing for the price!

Next to come is an i5 and the Mobo. I do have a question about mobos and processors though..

 

The i5 I have choosen is LGA 1155. I assume I have to buy a mobo that is also LGA 1155 right?

Yes you need to buy a motherboard that has the same socket type. Do they make i5's for LGA 1366? If you already haven't bought the i5, see if you can get one that is socket type 1366. Then when/if you decide to go for an i7 it'll be amazingly better.

That unlocked 2500K is a 1155. I'll do some more looking around. I also am going to go with a better mobo that has an optical port for my headphone. Can't go wrong with 7.1.

Ok, I get paid tomorrow and I'm looking at memory and possibly getting a case this week. Going to start with 4GB unless I can get 6 or 8 for a good price.

Got an email from TD about this sale.. Is this Dual Channel 8GB memory from Corsair any good? Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB PC12800 DDR3 RAM - 1600MHz, 2x4096MB, Non-ECC, Unbuffered at TigerDirect.com

 

I assume that dual channel is the best way to go if I'm going to have 2 sticks of memory at the same time yea?

That i7 isn't bad. As for RAM you should be fine with 4GB. The way I look at ram is that you can always add more if you need more. I've got 4 gigs and my computer runs just fine.

I've got 4 on my laptop now and it's fine. I'm just wondering if maybe 6GB is the new 4 ;)

There's not really a need to have more than 4GB yet unless you intend on playing multiple games at once, video editing, CAD etc. Especially if it's decent DDR3.

OK. 4 it is. I've been looking at Corsair memory sticks. Any others worth noting?

I have Crucial Ballistix in my PC. They are very good at being overclocked and having faster than specified timings. Had them for about 3 years and only 1 stick turned faulty but I got free replacements for all 4 thanks to the lifetime warranty.

 

Never used any other type of RAM in any of my PCs so can't really comment on them.

I've got Crucial memory in my computer. I believe the memory that I put in my Dad's computer is G-Skill or something like that, that's been in use for nearly 2 years now and it's just fine.

Corsair gave me no end of problems (although DDR3 was uber-new when I built mine). Once I sold the RAM back to the shop (at a loss) and bought OCZ Reaper DDR3 RAM I was all fine. However I've recently read that OCZ is moving away from making RAM.

What about Mobos, what do you all use? I'm looking for one with an optical port so I can use my Turtle Beach DX11's. 7.1 on these requires an optical port. Its gotta be intel based too.

Most good mobo's have a Optical/TOSlink port. I got the XFX nVidia n790i Ultra because I was too lazy to compare all those long and confusing model names used by Asus, Gigabyte, etc. It was a very good mobo for the time (would have to be considering it cost $630) and is still going strong.

 

Just be 110% sure the mobo is compatible with the RAM and CPU that you want, has a similar FSB speed, supports your choice of SLI or xFire (just in case), and go for Japanese capacitors if it's mentioned. Quite a few cheap motherboards die young due to bad capacitors. You'll probably find two or more brands that offer the motherboard you want at a similar price, so then just compare what extra special features/software/technologies you get and make your choice.

Yeah, I'm filtering them by 1155 interface or whatever you want to call it and I found this MSi for my price range :lol:

Stay away from Biostar, my dad's had two of their motherboards and neither lasted more than 6 months.

 

I have an Asus mobo that was top of the range when I got it in '08. Had digital coax and optical connectors with a decent built in sounds card on it. More USB ports than you could shake a stick at too. Asus do tend to be well equipped and reliable from my experience with them.

Yeah. I'm with an Asus Sabertooth, not had a single problem with it. The only problem I had was my own fault (Grounding the CPU Backplate against the MB's solder points. Bit of duck tape fixed that ;) )

My friend has this board, ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards- ASUS P8P67 PRO

its very good, he has the i5 2500k as well, he did a 5ghz overclock on it!

MSi has a special "one touch overclock" (or something along those lines) for the intel "K Series" processors. I'm looking at a 2500K i5 and these MSi's can support OC'd memory (2133 MHz) too. :)

Wait until june 11th and get a AMD Bulldozer. 4.0/4.2Ghz in turbo mode. Im switching from [email protected] to a FX-8130P. Its gonna be awesome.
