    I highly recommend watching the whole video and not just skipping through to the crash, it's only 12 minutes long. Great video and very inspirational towards the end.

      So if I understand correctly, they wanted to do a second speed test run, but he wanted to get the jump over with and didn't get the speed quite right.

       

      It's weird watching Mythbusters saying 'this much G force in an impact is fatal' and then watching drivers survive crashes like this with minor injuries. Fortunately most of the barrel rolls were in the air reducing the number of ground impacts.
