Those input files are encoded at over 50Mbps which makes them huge - around 25GB per hour of incoming video. With eight BBC TV channels plus 18 regional news broadcasts, that means we need to deal with up to 24 simultaneous incoming programmes, for a peak data rate of over a gigabit per second of incoming video.

What the hell is Iplayer?

BBC iPlayer. Where us brits can watch pretty much any BBC TV Program from the last 7 days.

You can view it in loooooads of different formats. HQ, normal, Download it for your PC, different sized vidoes, pop-out windows, Download it for some MP4 players, iPhone, Viewable on the net for iPhones / iPod Touches etc etc it goes on and on :)

I thought I was special as I've had iPlayer on my pod for a while then I saw the article is from March lol. The nerdy stuff was interesting.
