The Internet (in Australia)

Our old friend The Internet. I'm fairly new to online gaming, having only had the internet for 3 months. I already have problems with the Internet, in particular the speed. I love Call of Duty, but I can hardly ever play servers because I am 'high ping'. WTF?

I am shocked to see our speeds in comparison to other countries of the world. In Aus we can max at 24 MBit/s which is good but $140 per month + phone, wheras Hong Kong can get Gigabit 1024MBit/s connections, for a bit less. I mean, this is ridiculus! why can other countries pay the same amount of money and get a connection that is 25 times faster .

I do know they have better cabling, and Australia is upgrading their cabling now/soon, to a whopping 60Mbit i beleive?

Australia has always been in the stone age when it comes to Internet. The government won't approve the new broadband plan because they are afraid the kiddies will access porn even faster. Anyway you think Hong kong is bad my friend in florida has dirt cheap super fast fiber optic internet with no download limits.

You have the internet in Australia? Wow you're almost civilized now!

Haha I lol'd :D.

But in all seriousness those cons will start ripping into us poms now  lol.

Nevermind when we thrash them 5-0 in the Ashes we can start criticising them then :p lol.

U wish POMs, we'll crush you, or maybe not. Australian team is kinda sucky at the moment. *reliving world cup elimination* *head in hands* :sulk:

But there needs to be something done about the internet in australia, its getting worse and worse. We're increasing technologies slower than everyone else so we are falling further behind.

Last summer when I went to Cali the internet in the flat I stayed in was really fast, I only noticed that when I watched youtube video's and when I came back from there. :p

My internet is about 1/2 the speed of what it was 8 months ago. :(

I pay £35 ($70AUD) a month and have a 20Mb/s connection through cable. You guys really do have it bad when it comes to the internet.

My mum pays $59 (AUS) a month for a phone & Internet combo. The speed is a blistering fast 512kb Downstream 128kb Upstream (in other words i download at 50kb's & upload at 12kb's) :(

Is the cost of delivering the Internet in Australia that much greater than in the rest of the world that they feel the need to impose capping which simply wouldn't be accepted in any other developed country?

Apparently it's pretty much the same story in New Zealand too, I was reading an article on it just this morning on one of the blogs I read.

I appreciate it's a vast country so getting super fast connections across the board is going to be tough to impossible but imposing these strict and frankly low data limits is dreadful.

The speeds you guys are quoting are pretty horrendous even prior to being capped, and I assume none of you are living in the outback so there shouldn't be an excuse for such a dated service and contract set up.

You lot need to complain, a lot.

Sad thing is anytime you do complain the sales reps are all like "well our broadband is over 100x faster then dial up and should be good for all your needs"
