MW2: Our game has changed forever

Written by jockyitch

Black Saturday?

A day of infamy?

It's hard, very hard, for me to write objectively right now, but here is a summary of what we heard on BASH 123. If you missed it...we will have it on demand in a few minutes.

Fourzerotwo was on our BASH webcast this morning and he had a few surprises for the PC community.

Here are the snippets:

We're doing a lot on the backend to make the game accessible for everyone.

There is no delay for the PC version of MW2

There's prestige mode

Jason West at the MP event, said that he was dead on, on the matchmaking servers. We've been building a system on the backend called IW.NET.

You are completely reliant on IW.NET. There are no server lists. There are no dedicated servers.

You have private matches where you can customize the game

You cannot put MW2 on a dedicated server.

This is the first time we've ever done something like this and the team has huge plans for what IW.NET develops into.

Customizing your game...you have quite a few options in a private match

You're getting same game (as in Console), plus matchmaking and private match.

Server admin point-of view, NO DEDICATED SERVERS

I've summarized some of my own thoughts from the cast here:

General

IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam.

GSP's will no longer be renting out servers.

No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat.

Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam.

DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed.

Piracy was only a small reason for going to IW.NET - not the whole reason.

Clans:

No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers.

Listen servers will connect to each other.

IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin

Competitive Gaming

Competitive gaming has changed forever.

It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen.

Modding

Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2.

Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.

Today our game has changed for ever.

I'll leave this post with Josh Peckler's comments from planetmedalofhonor.com:

The server community is what's made us. It's what defined us.

IW.NET is getting the PC community to turn into consoles. You're trying to re-write our history.

So in a nutshell, no dedi servers, no mods, no competitive play, you have to pay for DLC's

I find it really annoying that they decide to screw over the whole of the PC community just because of the ones who decide to illegally download the game.

That's my assumption of the situation, the article says piracy played a part of, but not all of it. Although I imagine this is IW's way of trying to keep the peace. It will sell buckets on consoles, there are even morons paying for the Prestige Edition.

Infinity Ward like Money.

Sales = Money.

Piracy = No money.

Tarring everyone with the same brush = Priceless.

They don't care about which platform gives the consumer a better gameplay experience, they care about which platform can move the most legal units. It's more arduous to pirate console games than PC games. Combine this with the fact that most console gamers are casual players without the technical know how to pirate games and you have happy developers.

Dedicated servers would be nice... although being host owns too! xD

If I were to censor out what I'm gonna say it would probably paramount to "I am..."

Honestly, a worldwide boycott of the PC version should happen.

Piracy = no money

No dedicated servers OR Including matchmaking = no piracy

No piracy = lot of money

No dedicated servers OR Including matchmaking = unhappy PC gamers

unhappy PC gamers = still no money

So what's the point?

Getting rid of a huge part of a multiplayer game will hardly stop pirates in my opinion.

If they hear the single player story line is good they'll still download it. Most of them sit at home most of the day doing nothing so they have time to waste downloading anything and everything. Most of them know if they pirate games most of the time these days they wont get online because they need a CD-Key to be verified or whatever else.

So carry on Infinity Ward, phase out Multiplayer on your games for the PC. You'll still lose money whatever you do. If your plan is to 'stop' piraters, that is.

Well done shadow :)

But I have to agree with GTA.

Piracy with this I think will be a lot worse as less people are likely to want to play online so they will just get a copy from alternate sources. I myself have not yet cancelled my preorder as I am currently weighing up my options whether or not to do so ( plus im waay to busy to care about it ATM )

I found this petition while I was browsing on one of 3DGAMEMAN's videos on Youtube.

Get Infinity Ward to review their decision not to allow fully dedicated servers for their forthcoming game release CoD:MW2. Remember that this Call of Duty was made popular by PC Gamers who have supported the series throughout.

There's already 133259 signatures (obviously more by the time you read this). So sign it :D

Here's 3DGAMEMAN's video.
