Your Xbox Live Avatar can give a pet a good home

avapets.jpg

We often worry that our Avatars get lonely when we're not focusing our attention on our 360s. We can give them all the toys we want, but it's just not the same as the touch of another living, not-living pet. Tomorrow, they'll finally have a proper companion as pets come to the Avatar Marketplace, including Large Dog, Pug Dog, Dog in Bag, Cat, Siamese Cat, Long Haired Cat, Goldfish, Guinea Pig, Monkey, Bird, Snake and Pony each for 240 ($3).

By the way, we're hoping that by "Dog in Bag" we're talking about the purse kind and not the "adolescent sign of future deviant behavior" kind. Only time will tell, we suppose.

Standalone DJ Hero controllers now available for $70

If you've been sitting around on your fat stacks of cash, waiting to pick up an extra DJ Hero controller then now is the time, friend. Activision sent along a press release stating that the turntable controllers are now in stock at the Guitar Hero Store for $70 a pop, $40 cheaper than the regular, game-packing bundle.

With a weak showing on October's NPD charts and UK retailers slashing prices, we can't say we fully understand Activision's decision to charge so much for the turntables. From our vantage point, it looks like this: if Activision came down on the price a bit, more people would buy a second controller and have their friends try the game. Then, maybe those people would go out and buy their own set-up. Isn't that a novel idea?

Eco-Box: a greener way to protect games

gam_greendisc2.jpg

If you've bought a new 360 game recently, you may have already noticed this curiously Trivial Pursuit-inspired packaging being employed for titles like Left 4 Dead 2 and Modern Warfare 2. According to the Viva Group, the company that designed the packaging, the new "Eco-Box" is not only better for the environment (using 20 percent less plastic and creating 31 percent less CO2 emissions) but has "no real difference in quality or performance" when compared with standard packaging, reports IGN.

We, on the other hand, worry that the cheaper, flimsier feel of the cases (which will come to the Wii and possibly PS3) will turn people off. After all, If we have to choose between our grandkids drowning in a melted glacier someday or holding sturdy game packaging right now, we're going to go with the packaging every single time.

I knew the Modern Warfare 2 box felt weird, didn't realise it was because they're trying to save the invironment

If they really want to save the environment, why don't they just sell them in CD style cases, there really is no need for such a large DVD box with all that empty space inside. Talking of which, they should sell DVDs in CD cases too, and don't even get me started on the 360 points and gold membership cards coming in DVD cases.

Just double checked AssCreed2, normal case. Although it is a case I haven't seen before, which is quite an achievement considering my previous work. It's called a "Flexbox", it holds the disc really nicely, but it's so simple to get out, great design IMO. Much better than my Forza 3 LCE case.. The actual DVD case is really low quality, it takes a crowbar to open, and when you do get the thing open, both discs fly off the centre hold thing! Insane. :p
