Can you spot the game?

When I was a wee lad, i remember watching this game review thing on TV...I've forgotten or played most of the games, but the thing is, I just can't remember the name of a game I really fancied. It involved making creatures, and mixing those creatures up to make combinations, and these new ones have powers from both of the old ones. Also I remember them saying the game has around 500 creatures in all or something. So can someone help me out? Also, it's like AoE and Warcraft III, a RTS title...tried Gamespot, IGN, and other places, but no results. :S

hmm not sure whether it is spore because in spore you create your own creature so there is millions of combinations

Not Spore, played that lesson in Evolution once. I'm talking about basic RTS graphics like Battle Realms..and you get to invade other lands with these creatures..I think.
