PS3 Slim & Light with 120GB + 160GB

Right I was reading T3 magazine today (UK gadget mag) and they say there is a slim and light version going on sale in the next 9 months. Just done a bit of research and this is what seems to be in the PS3 pipeline (also a bit of psp news in there):

PS3/PSP

Sony has released a new software update for PSP that allows owners of the Slim & Lite model to make phone calls via Skype.

Sony has teamed up with tech company Nichia to develop a smaller, cheaper Blu-ray laser unit, which may eventually result in cheaper PS3s. More at Tech.co.uk.

Not only are we expecting the 80GB PS3 SKU to disappear, according to Ars technica, we should also expect 120 and 160GB models with Dual Shock 3 controllers. There there are no plans to introduce the models to the UK. Yet.

PS3/PSP

Almost as soon as the 3.90 PSP firmware was released, it was cracked. It took the hackers a mammoth two days this time.

Despite the rumours of 120GB and 160GB PS3s Gamedaily.com spoke to a reliable Sony source to find out what's actually going on with the PS3 SKUs. According to the source the executive teams and product strategists are meeting this week in Japan and, "there are a lot of different strategies under consideration, but nothing is final yet."

However, T3 suggests that rumours of a 'slim and lite' Playstation 3 may have some foundation.

Sony's games division finally turned a profit last quarter, anno unced shortly after Microsoft's game division also reported a profitable period. Overall, Sony's profits rose 25 per cent for the quarter, but Sony also announced sales targets for the PS3 have been dropped from 11 million to 9.5 million units, citing a slow start, while increasing PSP projections to 13 million from 10 million as originally expected.

They didn't know about all of it the first time round. That's the main reason they had to stop production of the 60GB PS3s, it was costing them more than they were selling them for to make them.

They stopped producing the 60GB as they would have been making 4 different SKU's, they would've had the 20GB, 40GB, 60GB and 80GB.

The 40gb has now replaced the 20gb and the 80gb will replace the 60gb.
