Themeless PhOTW?

Over the past 2 weeks, and might of been happening in the 20 weeks beforehand but i never really payed too much attention, theres been a few arguments surrounding PhOTW

My suggestion it to make it Themeless, in which we still stay with the name of the Competition, We just post our best picture, no matter what its of, and post it in the competition. Surely one of you has seen something brilliant to take a photo of, and then you find it doesn't fit the theme of the competition?, well this way we may get even better photos as people aren't limited to a theme.

As i mentioned, there were arguments over the last 2 themes, people had taken the time to get those great photographs for the competition, for them to be disallowed, This way that wouldnt happen. This might not work/might do, i'm not 100% sure, all i know is a few people that enter PhOTW are considering stopping because of the reasons above, and its would be a shame to see that :)

Okay, I understand your thinking. I think that the problem is not with the theme, the problem is in the people. Last week for example - a cheap car but still people taking photos of expensive Skoda and Jaguar. Sorry, I don't care if it's rare in your country but I'm sure you see hundreds of Astras/Corsas/206s/207s/Golf/Polos, so why not take a photo of one. This weeks theme - the sky, just point the camera a bit up and you'll have an entry that no one will say that it's against the rules. It's just that simple, follow the rules and stick to the theme and you won't have trouble and countless posts full of arrguing and useless friction. I know some of you just won't like what I say but that's what I think and that's what this thread is about, so you know...

Just my 2 pennies. ;)

I kinda agree with Mike on this one. The whole "that doesn't fit the theme" arguments are getting very tiring imo.

Besides, you can always argue on what fits the theme or not, since everyone has different opinions. I think it would be interesting to try Mike's idea, if for just a week.

^ We did - week 13 had no theme - RB26DETT chose that as his theme.

I must agree with Koenigsegg here. If a theme is given to me which I feel would not allow enough people to enter (like a theme of 'Ferrari' for example), then I will go back to the person that chose it and ask them to change it (if only slightly) - but I won't change it for them. I do feel that the last two themes have been fairly simple, as stated above, you might live in a poorer town, but even so, there will be cars - not Ferraris, but just basic simple cars. And if you live in a rich town, then not everyone will own supercars - there will be people who just want something to take them from A to B. And the sky is everywhere, pointing a camera up while also taking a decent photo isn't hard.

And yes, taking a photo to a theme is harder than having none. But thats the idea of PhOTW - to encourage creativity (along with the other photo topics) to make people better photographers.

I am also tired of arguments over what fits the theme, but I feel that isn't due to the theme's complexity or nature. I think some people here (I won't name anybody, or say whether I've been arguing with them) face a bit of a lack of common sense. You, the photographer, must decide what fits the theme, but I feel the problems aren't because people have different opinions on what fits the theme; because the themes are all fairly well set out IMO - that is they aren't too vague and not too narrow minded. Two examples of complete opposite (and nasty) themes could be 'Atmosphere' and 'Ferraris'. Atmosphere could take in pretty much anything from the sky to a dark room, whereas Ferraris is quite limited.

Another problem I have also constantly touched on is the fact of actually taking a photo to the theme. It is obvious when people simply go into their archives and choose out a photo which they took in their holidays last year or whatever. Its not creative, its not difficult, and most of the time it causes arguments because it doesn't fit the theme, as it wasn't taken with the theme in the mind of the photographer.

I don't see having no theme as a way forward with PhOTW. If that happened, it would just become the Lens Flair - post your best photos thread, in which we decide on which is the best. We have a thread like that, its called the Lens Flair (and Post You Photos) thread(s). Those two are great for random photos without a theme, as people give feedback and opinions on how they could be improved - from which we learn. However PhOTW is designed to be the way of giving people something to take a photo of, then seeing how well they can adapt to that.

I know it is and I can see it but this isn't a way to counteract the situation. Infact it would probably make things worse. I mean there might be two photos just as good as each other but of different things and that may cause people to argue etc... I can see it happening so imo it's really not a good idea.

Thanks for your opinion though. ;)

Thats what a poll is for though, the answer to that is final ;)

A poll would solve the current problem "should so and so's picture be allowed in Yes/No?", but it would be too time wasting and wouldnt work, as what happened last week was the majority thought the entry should be allowed, but 1/2 people said no and they got their own way, thats what needs to be fixed, someone who makes the final decision, or make it completely public, no one's opinion counts for more than someone's elses, it would just be a lot better than it currently is now

This argument about last weeks PhOTW is getting on my nerves. You didn't shut up about entries in both threads now people have brought it up again. Yet again defending my entry, which didn't win anyway so it makes no difference - A Skoda Fabia vRS is common here, costs less than the Golf MK5 (which was said to be acceptable) posted in the thread and is no different to a Polo TDI (which was also said to be acceptable), it just has some spoilers and alloys on it, big wow, get over it. The Jaguar posted is a difficult one but I still would have allowed it.

As for that entries thread and the poll itself, it's in the past move on.

Crap like this makes me want to swear my teeth out on this forum but I know I'm not allowed.

Maybe I should have posted a picture of a flaming Ford Escort, would that have been acceptable or would people have whined about that as well? Makes you think.

My two cents on this is that the theme chooser dictates whether an entry is acceptable from now on. No-one else. Blatently the theme is the theme-choosers theme.
