There's a DDS plugin for Gimp! likely.

Or you can try Paint.net, which I've been using for months. Great and comprehensive support of this format.

Some people appear to experience quality losses when using DXTBmp. Opening is perfect, editing with MSPaint also, back to DXTBmp too... but as soon as the DDS is saved by DXTBmp, some edges and borders might get pixellized / dirty :(.

 

So I'm only using Paint.net now.

The rim ends up being a weird color scheme, and there's no picture in the Alpha Channel when I use the "Make your own textures" method. :(

I take it you opened the wrong rim file? If you read the notes at the top, you'll see where you went wrong. (It's even in red!)

One of the other fords has them. Don't know about file size, but you'd just have to check it out yourself..
