Render me Speechless Earlier this year there was a discovery about a racing game being developed by Ivory Tower (Ivory) for current and maybe even next-gen systems. Ivory is a team made-up of a number of original Test Drive Unlimited (TDU) devs (TDUteam) including the main man responsible for the physics and device support as well as a slew of other talented individuals. This team looks to be creating the game for Ubisoft or is working in co-operation with them on a project, either way it makes sense as Ubisoft have some huge titles in many genres except for the driving/racing one. Those of you who have been on our forum community for a while know that this is nothing new and that we really wish for the Ivory game to be a true successor to TDU and are awaiting news and information about this title with bated breath. The actual successor Test Drive Unlimited 2 (TDU2) was regarded as a bit of a disappointment and even though it has the visuals, environment and a fun side-game with the Casino, the handling and poor Force Feedback (FFB) wheel support drove many ardent TDU fans away. Couple this with the dismal support of the game by Atari and the constant connection and server issues and you have a game that even today acts more like a Beta than a proper retail release. So what exactly do we have here then? To be honest we don't know and in all fairness it could be nothing but Hughes Poncet is a former employee of Eden Games and is or was at Ivory, and if we look at the name of the images as they were posted especially the last part, then eyebrow raising beckons; InGameVehiclesbyIvoryTower & InGameVehiclebyIvoryTower. Of course this could simply be a talented modeller showing what the software in question is capable of producing, but it doesn't stop us imagining what if does it?! I have Candy, get in the Van! The New Year is fast approaching and in true Turn 10 style they don't let the fact that's it's Christmas or even a new year spoil the festivities, so much so that any chance of a delay coming to their usual 'announcement' and 'release' of the next "monthly DLC" is quickly put to rest with this latest announcement and date of release for the 'Recaro' Car Pack coming for Forza Horizon on the very first day of the brand new year.... yes the 1st January 2013 for those of you trying to work that out. This is a pack that has been labelled as having "something for everyone" and they are not kidding, from the crazy 'yank tank' Cadillac Escalade or the track honed Lexus LFA Nürburging Edition and even a basic GMC van, yes you read that right, a van, so typical looking and dull that it could easily be inserted into the game as an AI civilian and be totally forgotten about. There is indeed! something in this pack that will appeal to everyone, I mean look at this; you have the Exotic muppet with the Pagani, the JDM muppet with the Lexus, the US Muscle muppet with the Mustang, the 'Gangsta' muppet with the Cadillac, the Racer muppet with the Lotus, the 'Sunday Driver' muppet with the SLR McLaren and the 'to be avoided at all costs' muppet with the Van. Whatever category you fall into then fear not as there is a vehicle here especially catered to YOU! You've seen models recycled in sequels, you are familiar with the various LODs used in competing games, and maybe have even borrowed a few models to mod into another game. All this knowledge then enables you to complain when cars end up being resold or when they don't appear as early or as accurate as we'd all like. Wouldn't you just love to have a chat with these developers and watch over their shoulder as they get these models game-ready? Well, that's not as impossible as it sounds. Over at the WMD forums all members with tool packs can view the Vehicles forum and browse through each sub-forum for every licensed car manufacturer. Inside you'll find a locked thread where staff post updates and screenshots for each milestone they hit as they work on building a car model. Then there is a discussion thread where you can ask the developers questions, share feedback, and point out any issues. There are also threads where members gather reference material in one place to help out further. Developers essentially report progress in the WMD forums as if we were their supervisors. So these locked threads where developers report progress; what's in them? I'm glad you asked. Below is a small selection of images from one such thread. You can see one of the developers building the 1980 Group 5 Ford Capri, including mechanical components often omitted in other racing games. The thread is locked simply to keep the staff posts grouped together instead of spread between all the other member posts; there is a separate discussion thread for each car model. And let's not forget about similar threads for other parts of the game. Witness the massive attention to detail to bring the Nordschleife to life, be astounded at updates to the weather system as they are previewed, tested and released, discuss future multiplayer features (and race online with) Senior Producer Andy Garton, watch early pit screw animations, contribute to the grid girls references thread, and have fun in general trying to shape one of the best up-and-coming racing titles with like-minded people from around the world.
