I also agree, the term is abused nowadays. I personally have a pretty high standard for what I consider a supercar. In my opinion, even the Murcielago is not quite a supercar. Then again, it seems that the cars that fit the title change as time passes, for instance, one could argue that the XJ220 was once a supercar, but compared to what we see now it is but a high performance sports car.

EDIT:

Again, it depends on what you call a supercar. If you are calling the Vette one, you must have low standards, as it is really only comparable to sports cars IMHO. And besides, what's to say a 911S with a good driver can't beat a CGT and not still be a mere sports car?

Thats true

OK ... time for me !!!!!

Well you all will know my thoughts (along the same lines as Diablo/Custard) that the term is now over used by journalists and that most 'supercars' are 'sportscars' or 'grand tourers' ... so I won't rant here (as I've already done that this morning in another thread)

the greatest supercar in my opinion is a McLaren F1 ... but a 2 cars come a close second ... Miura and F40 ... for equally obvious reasons

As to the comment about the Ferrari F60 and the Ferrari Enzo Ferrari ... yes the Enzo Ferrari is 'sort of' the F60 if you mean the car to celebrate 60 years ... although it didn't get launched 10 years after the F50

The Ferrari F40 is the epitome of what a supercar is.

And also in the sportscars arena there is what you could call multiple tiers of them startig at the lowly MX-5, RX-7/8 then you're upto the slightly higher end BMW M3, NSX, Porsche Boxster and then we have the Corvette, R8, AMV8, DB9 right upto the final tier which would probably be M6, F430, Gallardo, Viper, ZO6, TVR's, 911 turbo, GT3, GT2 etc.

Then you have the supercars; Current examples are

Pagani Zonda F / Roadster (this oozes supercar just like the Countach did)

Ferrari Enzo Ferrari

Lamborghini Murcielago

Ford GT

Porsche Carrera GT

And then we have the newest term; Hypercar (not coined by Clarkson btw)

Bugatti Veyron (the daddy)

McLaren F1

Koenigsegg CCR/CCX/CCXR etc

I see the Bugatti Veyron is quite called the greatest supercar ever.. but surely just becuase it can do 253 mph it cant just be called the greatest because of this achievement!

The ultimate supercar in my eyes should do everything.. comforting, reliable, practical.. (not as practical as a Ford Focus), and be truly amazing.. and i drove a NSX and to me that is the ultimate!

I dont know why!

But to me the Veyron is just a fast car, not a super or hyper car!

No No No ... a supercar shouldn't be practical and doesn't have to be reliable

As me and Diablo were chatting last night ...

a Supercar (and hypercar) was the car you had a poster of on your bedroom wall when you were a kid ... for my era it was the Countach and F40 ... and yes I am aware that for some of you kids that'll mean you think an R34 GT-R is a supercar ... but it's not

a supercar is a dream car OF IT'S TIME (the most important part there as someone earlier mentioned that a car is a supercar if it can out perform a supercar ... which is blantantly rediculous if you consider how many cars could get round a track quicker than a Miura) ... it should be about style, performance, handling and engineering ... to varying degrees ... comfort, practicality and reliability shouldn't come into it anywhere ... an F40 is none of those but all of the previous

1 and only: Mclaren F1.

Reasons why?

Its fast, looks beautiful, very good to drive (apparantly,) the interior is great, it has GOLD lining the engine(the world's best conductor.) It turns heads, it sounds brilliant, there isn't any car like it. Thats why its the best car in the world.

I think the same :) and i couldn't say it better.

ohh.. wait another pluspoint best seat position :D

Thank you! A Vette is not a supercar! Sorry redvette, but it isn't.

So if a supercar is to be prized a supercar, then the requirements drop, because the Veyron is comfortable and practicle, even well made!

So because if people think this is a supercar the gates of cars becoming supercars from grand tourers say increases.

Thats why i always see the Veyron as a very fast GT car!

But of our time i think the most successful supercar in the way on thinking and engineering has to be the Ferrari F40, Honda NSX (sorry if i keep saying the Honda NSX but i have a true love for this car! not sure why).

Lol a NSX is NOT a supercar  well If you guys consider a ford GT a super car then vettes and vipers should enter too, or take the GT out of the list ;)

NSX is a supercar ... one of the Few (if not only) supercars from the Far East

Ford GT is a sports car ... original GT40 is a race car (of course)

Veyron is a Supercar or a Hypercar or a H A L O (letters spaced because of some stupid shooter game) car depending upon choice

I wouldn't personally say a Veyron is practical ... couldn't imagine popping to the supermarket in it to do my weekly shop. Veyron isn't a GT as it's the wrong shape/layout ... a GT would typically be a 2+2 (sometimes just a 2) with front engine, rear wheel drive and a boot big enough for some luggage for you and your companion to go Touring ... hence the name Grand Tourer
