The thing that really bothers me about TDU on PC isn't just the occasional garbage texture, but the generally poor standard of most of the game's signage. Some of it looks like it was drummed up by the work experience boy in MS Paint, and none of it shows any real attempt to bed it into the game world. It's all a bit crap and surreal. So I'm using that as the starting point for an HD mod.

 

So far I've done all the game's billboards and some of its shops. I'll probably go as far as the road textures but I've no plans to touch the cars. Textures are generally 3x the vanilla size with no noticeable impact on performance. I've also added a subtle distressed look to help them blend in: seams for the billboards and posters, and a touch of grime for the shop marquees.

In answer to the previous post, getting them in is pretty much the same as any other texture, though you will need a magic map file because of the size difference. I get the nvidia DDS plugin to create the mipmaps while saving, and that's about it. The one problem I'm having at the moment is that the billboards start reverting to the vanilla ones after about 15 minutes of driving, and I've no idea how or why that's happening. The vanilla textures aren't even in the bnk files anymore. :confused:

Magic map required - that's clear so far. But, the fact that the game accepts larger textures is interesting to know. Seriously. Thanks for that information.

I guess that's because those billboards are used for ingame advertising. When you are online, the game downloads images (which sometimes can be ads) from the server. In offline mode this will probably not happen. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

That would explain the delay in them switching and their magic appearance from outside the resource files. I've never provided Gamespy details for this install, though, and always play in a "Servers Unavailable" state. I have the Metaboli download version if that makes a difference.

 

I'll disable my network adapter and try it again. That should prove it one way or another.

Most of this evening was spent trying to get the perfect gloss layer for the tarmac without it smothering all the detail. It's not quite there but close enough for the time being. The texture in these shots is 4x vanilla res, performance unaffected.
