Microsoft to up 360 disc capacity?

Microsoft recently opened applications for a new Xbox 360 beta programme (NA Only), citing a "New Xbox 360 Disc Format". Digital Foundry/Eurogamer have got word from a high ranking source that this new format will be a 1GB expansion in capacity over existing discs.

 

If you live in North America and are happy to go through with the possible inconveniences of a beta programme you can snag yourself a free copy of Reach, assuming you don't already own it. Just go here to join the fun.

Why don't large games wait for the next console? We all know the next xBox (and PS4, for that matter) are in development, and have been for some time. I know - marketing, attention-to-the-product, and all that, but still, when you think about it, isn't this just beating a dead horse?
