Washed and clayed the car this morning. It was the first time I used a claybar, and the car feels super smooth! Will be hitting it with some polish and sealant later today.

Also some old time members may notice: I finally got a part I've wanted for a very long time at the front of the car!

So after spamming the chatbox for a year about wanting to get something newer to replace my 202 C-Class... it has happened! No more worries again, Mike

Now that I don't live on my own yet (never felt the need to leave), I wanted to upgrade car while I still can thanks to the relatively low spending pattern I can maintain. It's definitely not a matter of being rich, or and-and, it's a matter of what you give priority: an own appartment, a 700 euro phone, go on vacation 5 times a year and get new high-brand clothes every month, or none of those and instead save it up long to get one big thing. Each to his/her own.

I was looking for a year, started with a 211 E-Class, then it went to a first-gen CLS, but I never found one that really pulled me in, either that or they were already sold before I could make up my mind. I've seen the entire offer of Mercs for sale in the dutchland, and early this year I set my sights on a 212 E-Class, the boxy one. Again, the most interesting ones were sold 2 days after I found them, and all the others had missing equipment, wrong colors or the sellers were not entirely trustworthy. And ofcourse warranty isn't a thing you could expect by standard, neither is a replacement car if yóur car needs fixing or maintenance. And then, I changed again. From a 212 to a 218 CLS (basically same car with a few different panels and lower roof).

I've been F5'ing the heck out of this pc after I saw a CLS350 CDI at a known Mercedes specialist. It's one of my dream configurations: AMG styling, black outside, black inside, black trim material and even a black headliner... I decided to go for it. I called the owner/seller of the company, got positive answers on the questions I had, and arranged a test drive. Incredible, just incredible. It runs smooth, silent, quick, and it's very comfortable. It has all important stuff and very nice stuff, such as a black headliner, full AMG styling (not aftermarket), ventilated seats, memory for seats, mirrors and steeringwheel, it has COMAND (high-end computer/nav thing) and much more. It's so far away from a 202 C-Class engineered in the early 90's, though it's clear they are both from the same brand with the same qualities.

And now it's mine :D. When we arrived to pick it up, it was standing right next to the entrance of the office, with a massive blue bow on the bonnet. The owner of the company explained me how everything works, and after half an hour we left the old C-Class behind and drove home in a 5 year old CLS. It has a complete known history and I bought it with 1 year full warranty. The previous owner was an air traffic controller and traded the CLS in for his 8th Merc, an S-Class. One of my reasons to buy it from this specific specialist btw is that they are a partner of Mercedes-Benz and they have a service for replacement cars at very low rates. Plus ofcourse the 1 year warranty. It's not really that I have no faith, because I feel good about the place, the people and their service. But at the end of the line it's a 2011 luxury segment car with lots of tech, I wouldn't dare to buy it anywhere else, many companies just stick to standard 3 months or 6 months of very limited warranty (only on engine/gearbox for example).

If anybody would be interested, I could update this post later with the official datacard of the vehicle.

Go take it for a drive and see for yourself but I will say it's.. well.. not slow, but it's got no torque. You have to rev the balls out of it to get anywhere! I also found the interior plastics, mostly on lower panels/doors, to be really cheap feeling. But you can pick up a tidy used model and mod the crap out of it for not very much money, so there's that!

I saw a brand new face-lift SL on dealer plates (not registered yet) today leaving Dundee. The Driver was NOT waiting up! (Rapid seem's a understatement to say, and was 'only' a 400!)

Also, finally saw a Smart CrossBlade :D

Ofcourse easy 'spotting' when they are standing for sale, still though I don't really see these often, including non-AMG SL's of that generation (R231), often labelled in the media as a car with questionable styling, maybe that's why it's so rare .

Had a look at a Jaguar Mark II 3.8. I was told it's an original race car with an inline-six recently built in the UK up to factory spec, although the guy who is working on it has modified the cooling system as these cars like to overheat. It was a rusty shell with the cage already installed, then repainted here and the guy is getting it all together. It is all original sans the exhaust, brakes, and mandatory safety features such as the Sparco buckets and fuel tank.

@Ryzza: Some cars go for silly low prices, such as top end barges from the 90's (LS400's,S-Class's, XJ's, etc) are often found at the £1000 - £1500 price range in the UK., in roadworthy condition, with an MOT. Keeping in mind some of them would have cost in the area of £80 - 90,000 when new! (Taking inflation, etc into account)
Why? Well fuel cost and price of some parts.

Likewise, boggo everyday cars will hold there price well for whatever reason. I've not really seen any Bini's in the £1000 price range for example.

Scott win's it for me, got a soft spot for that style Galant and doesn't seem to need much work from what I can tell (Sadly can't do an MOT history check due to hidden Number plate). Often considered IS200's and the late models have aged well, and generally well looked after. As for the ML? Well it's a Merc so it's a German I can live with.
TDUFREAK was very tempting though I'll admit!

£615 change means that you spent over 90% of the budget so I'll allow it

    I was looking at MR2s, that's a good example you've got there.

I also had that very exact XJR bookmarked as I was going to put an XJ as Dave's car too :p Great minds and that.

If the first choice never had to have AWD, I could just post up my Civic, LS & Cappuccino & still have change for a holiday stateside for 2 weeks.
I spend enough time in this category of cars, so this is right up my street. Which means it's going to be bloody hard for me to pick which car's I want.... (And also not want to buy said cars myself)

    Anyways...

    For The wife...Fiat Panda 4x4

It get's her to A-B in somewhat comfort, Perfect to do the basic things like getting to work, nip to the shops, pick up the kids, meeting Sandra for a gossip, etc. Reliable enough so Dave won't have to worry about too many weekends doing work to it. And unlike alot of "4x4s", these things can hold there ground when off road.

Price: £2850 for this honest & cared for example.

    For Dave...Jaguar XJR

Dave could have been dull and gotten a run of the mill modern saloon on finance like the other guys at the office. But Dave's not a run of the mill person, and likes to be different. Dave decided to get something with class, style and a V8. The XJR is just that, it's 4.0 Supercharged V8 pumps out 380Hp and gives all the comofrt of a traditional English manner house.

This nice, honest example set him back just £3750 (He told the wife it was cheaper, and that it's a lesser model...but she knows him better than that)

And the wild card? With only £965 to spend...

    Toyota MR2 (SW20)...

Dave hunkered after one of these in his Youth, but sadly could't afford one back then. But 20-odd years later he now can, and with the Kitchen & bathroom having been finally re-decorated he decided to treat himself, despete what the other half said. (She's warmed to it though)

Another honest car, a very early example at that, for just £850.

Thats left me with £115 change...

Edit: Oh cock...I was working on a £7,000 budget. :fp:
Will keep my choice as it is though. The extra money went into getting a new sofa, so's to stop the misses moaning about having bought the MR2.

I thought it'd be a good time to bring back the Garage Challenge threads, it's been gone for a year ( Time goes quickly).

    This time you've been given:
    £7,500 GBP / $10,800 USD / $15,000 AUD / €9,500 EUR

    The Scenario (2-3 Vehicles):

Average suburban housewivfe needs something with 4WD for those awful dangerous journeys to the school gates to drop off little Clancy for a day of playing Yu-Gi-Oh.

Average salesman husband called Dave needs something comfortable-ish to cover the miles, but something which makes him feel like he hasn't sold his soul and lives a semi-exciting life.

Bonus car: Surprise me, you don't have to have a 3rd choice but if you manage to get a 3rd exciting vehicle in the garage then you're going to help yourself to victory.

    The Rules:

You MUST spend almost all the money, this is to stop 'someone' (Calster) from replying 'I'll have 4 Austin Metros and pocket the change to spend on awful tasting alcohol'. Obvs don't care if you have 5 pound change, but do NOT go over.

Must be a REAL car, no toy ferrari FF's (or kit cars).

Unlike previous challenges, due to the small budget and how different second hand car markets can be, you can choose cars listed in the US, the EU or AUS :nods:

You have until 8pm GMT+1 on Tuesday 17th May to get your choices in before we close it to decide who the winner is.

It is indeed a cracking car and one of, if not the best car you can get for the money. It is a fairly popular car yes but I haven't seen that many of them about. Most of the people I've seen driving them are 30+ mainly due to the cost or the odd 17 year old who used the bank of mummy and daddy and will more than likely ruin the car.

But yea, it is Scottish and Glasgowish. :(

Still can't believe I'm getting 35mpg from it with my blasting around the country roads going whoooosh at every opportunity.

My only problem with it is't the car it's self...just half the owners and the fact you see so many of them (I know 10 people with them...)

I have to say though, not a fan of your car because of one very small thing...It was originally registered in Glasgow! Yuk...

Finally managed to get out on a dry day to give the Abarth a thrashing, and oh boy she diddent disappoint! :D

Had a blast up South Deeside, then up the Cairn o Mount & down to Fettercarin, before heading to Edzell taking some of the back roads, then along to Brechin and to Montrose(Again, on the back roads). Then took the Coastline route back to Aberdeen. Thankfully came across very few cars so made the most of it!

Most of the roads I took are near single track ones with lots of twist's, curves and bumps (Airborne 3 times...), will really need to get a video of the 'Cairn O mount' road for you guy's as I've gone on about it enough.

Anyways, stopped for a wee bit for some photos...

For now, I main my sister's Mercury Milan, an '07 base model, pretty peppy for what it is. Really, it's just a Ford Fusion with the Mercury badge slapped on it. The transmission sucks, though. I've actually gotten whiplash from a shift going uphill.

Finally looking to buy my own car. I am looking at either a 6 cylinder Z3 or an NA miata. Preferrably a 1994-1997 model for the latter, since they have the 1.8.

Not so keen on the Z3, though. Maintenance costs.
