BMW owner tapes black car to white

 

When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off.

I've seen vinyl like that before, but never actually seen anyone repaint a car with it :p

I personally would hate to put it on, imagine if you finish it all and find an air bubble, i'd do my nut.

But then instead of a bubble, there would be a a whole

The person who gave me a ride in his carrera GT did this to his car to go on a supercar cruise.

This was quite a while ago. Its very impressive, even done all the way up to the exposed carbon fiber in the engine bay so it looks exactly like the original paint. Real pain to get off though apparently.

Until eventually you get a big lump of tape on the side of the car. New passenger protections, soft side impact cushions :D

Strange, I was just reading about someone wanting to do this with their Fabia on the Briskoda forums. Infact they used those exact pictures to show what they were talking about.

 

Someone also posted a picture on there of something using this technique to turn their Gallardo chrome using effect vinyl.

Wow, that's a pretty cool idea... I'd love to do summat like that to car with some sort of colour scheme or pattern. Hoorah for individuality! :p

I doubt its cheaper, I mean it must be alot more difficult to put tape than painting it
