Woah! That is an amazing idea. Would certainly help people get back in their cars when in tight spaces etc... It's a bit like the BMW Z1 but on this, the door goes all the way down out of sight instead of half of it staying there. :p

Sorry but as the resident Auto engineer here can i just say that this is .... well you know

As to why you wouldn't do it ... too expensive ... too complex ... too heavy ... takes up too much space in a package ...

Next thing they'll be replacing the wheels !

I'll stick to a old system that seems to work. That is, two hinges at one end and a locking handle system at the other. The way cars are built now makes them fun. Its a mechanical process heaving a door open, and I love it! I personally don't even really like the sliding doors on my parent's Kangoo. They just aren't natural enough. Butterfly and scissor doors mean you will bang your head all the time. And those ones are just weird. Who wants to press a button to get out? Not me for sure. And the only other doors I might want, is the Koenigsegg style, simply because they are brilliant. They will kerb too easily though, which would be painfully expensive.
