Sussex Police get lightweight Lotus Exige

PoliceLotus.JPG

Boy racers beware – Sussex Police have a new member on the force: a 140mph supercharged Lotus Exige.

But don’t expect to see it careering around your estate – Sussex Police are showcasing the lightweight Lotus at events to get keen young drivers to talk to them.

The police-liveried Lotus Exige – capable of topping 140mph and accelerating from 0-60mph in just 4.1 seconds – is touring Sussex to attract young drivers so police can drive home the dangers of reckless driving.

Sergeant Paul Masterton said: “Many places in Sussex have a problem with youths speeding around, with their stereos blaring, making a general nuisance of themselves.

“We get calls about it every weekend, but when we turn up they usually speed off in the opposite direction as soon as they see us. It means we can never engage directly with these young people, and tell them about the dangers they’re causing.

“When we pull up in this Lotus, however, it’s usually them that are approaching us to have a look at the car!”

Specialist Lotus dealer Dream Machines, based in East Sussex, has equipped the force with the Exige – complete with the Sussex Police insignia and flashing blue lights.

Sergeant Masterton is keen to engage with youths in language they understand – the £35,000 Exige is one of the most sought after and highly respected sportscars on the market.

He said: “A huge number of 17 to 25-year-olds die or cause other deaths on the roads each year, and even more suffer serious injury.

“Any initiative which can help reduce these numbers must be welcomed with open arms.”

LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do Sussex Police really think showcasing a Lotus Exige would make the boy racers think about going slower ?????

NO Way !!! The Lotus Exige means about has much to them as Classical FM does = IT MEANS NOTHING TO THEM !!!

They might take notice if a Saxo in police livery had a chavvy bodykit, a sound system producing 1billion watts and a HUGE 50inch exhaust and stupidly big 19" alloys from Halfords then they might take notice but I can't see it myself !

They need to make a Reventon Police Car! or a Buggatti :)

Plus, the video has been removed from YouTube - the one from you're post link.

Still, very nice shots! - I highly doubt that the cops use these cars for chases, as the cost of damage would be too high!

I think they will take notice of it, they do of the EVO's and Scoobies round here, well, when they are around that is.

I can't see them justifying an exige, I can understand EVO's and scoobies but its like the MET with the Lambo's, I can't see how they justify them.

probably has the post is quite a few months old.

Surly people will just make there cars quicker so they can beat it? Its probably just so the higher up poilce people can take it for a blast up the motorway or somthing.

Lets be honests how many car chases req a lambo or an exige, not many unlesss its a properly tuned car, 9/10 times it will be a hot hatch with an extra large baked bean can welded to the exhuast or a nicked car thats quite old so wouldnt be able to go that fast.

A lot of Police forces have Lancer Evolution VII and VIII's to catch speeders. Speaking of high speed pursuits, anyone read about the one the Italian Polizia Gallardo got into with a Porsche 911? hehe 280km/h+

All i've seen in Hampshire is Skoda Octavia VRs, 3 series, and your normal focus's and stuff. Nothing intressting. Oh yer i've seen a couple of Evo's aswell, there quite rare though.

I have only actually seen West Midlands Police traffic division use the V70 T5's and Volvo S60's.

The usual cops use Vauxhall Astra diesels (:oook:) and Peugeot 307 diesels (:oook:) How cheap can you get lol ????

Drive on the B roads leading upto Loch Ness and you will come arse to face with either a Subaru Impreza WRX Sti (Silver unmarked), BMW 535i (prev gen) with Sport Package (Silver unmarked) and recently I heard they got hold of an Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII, can you guess the colour and markings?

It's mainly due to the bikers and caravans though but they are always up for a chase and these guys can drive fast. It's like their Nurburgring!

In Holland they have multiple V70Rs, Passats with Golf R32 engines & R32s with diesel look. :p Would love to see one of those in the mirror lol.

Nothing much here either. Toyota Corollas (new and old), Mazda 323s (new and old), Subaru Impreza 1.6s, Toyota Hiluxes, Mitsubishi Lancers (old old old ones), Mitsubishi Space Wagons, and some Isuzu pickups for off-road. Oh, and many Ford Tranists and Ivecos. For the highway patrol (we call it the Traffic Police here), there used to be E36 BMWs and Volvo V40s, but now they all use the MY05 Subaru Impreza WRXs
