Hispano-Suiza HS21-GTS

Spanish Hispano-Suiza, founded in the early 1900's, was in many years a traditional manufacturer of super cars. It was deteriorating, and the latest car model with Hispano-Suiza name was produced just before the Second World War. In 2000, presented the Spanish Mazel Engineering a concept they called Hispano-Suiza HS21, without having anything with the original company to do. This, HS21-GTS is an evolution of the original concept car.

Cizeta-Moroder V16T

Cizeta-Moroder is the result of a strange partnership. The Italian engineer Claudio Zampolli and the legendary music producer Giorgio Moroder walked together in the early nineties to build a supercar. They were joined by a gang of former Lamborghini employees, and the result was Cizeta-Moroder V16T. The car was designed by Marcello Gandini, the same designer who designed the Lamborghini Diablo, and hence the extreme similarity of the two cars. Giorgio Moroder left the rest of the project, and the few production cars that were built was the so called Cizeta V16T.

 

The car is equipped with a V16 engine, six liters, and a top speed of 328 km/h(204mp/h). 0-100 km/h(0-62mp/h) goes away in four seconds, and the price was outrageous in 1991, $ 300,000. A total of eight poor produced copies from 1991 to 1995, but the car can apparently still be ordered, now at a price tag of $ 649,000 US Dollars.

Tip: This car can be driven in Gran Turismo 4!

Dome Zero

Japanese Dome presented its "supercar" Zero at the Geneva Motor Show in 1975. Dome had already built racing cars for about ten years, and thought that it was time to build some (few) production vehicles. Zero was fitted with a straight six from Nissan at 145 horsepower, matched to contemporary Porsches. A not exactly hair-raising performance, but thanks to the low weight of 920 kg gave it nevertheless manage performance. The car was never approved by the Japanese authorities, mostly because the Dome did not have the funds to the extremely costly tests. Thus, the project was dropped.

Tip: This car can be driven in Gran Turismo 4!

Jiotto Caspita

Japan Dome was also behind the development of Caspita for Jiotto Design. Unlike the Zero, which was equipped with an inline six of 145 horses were Caspita a true supercar. It was only equipped with one twelve-cylinder boxer engine with 456 hp, from Formula 1, which was later replaced by a V10 engine, also from F1. The car was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1988, but because of the contemporary financial crisis, the project was dropped - and only one prototype was built.

Gillet Vertigo

Belgian, Gillet Tony was for many years a successful racing driver, both home in Belgium and internationally, and for many years he was a Belgian importer for the Dutch sports car brand Donkervoort. In 1992 he presented his concept Vertigo, and a couple of years later, he showed a production version of the same car. It was built in carbon fiber, was equipped with a magnum V6 engine from Alfa Romeo and had a time record for the fastest 0-100 km/h(0-62 mp/h) for production cars. Time? 3.1 seconds - a record that has been beaten by numerous supercar's later on. To date, 25 Vertigo been sold.

Tip: A racing version of this car can be driven in Gran Turismo 4!

Laraki Fulgura

Laraki Fulgura is something as unusual as a supercar from Morocco, originally presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2002, and later shown in an updated version in 2005. The car is built on the platform of the Lamborghini Diablo, and equipped with a six-liter V12 engine from Mercedes that delivers 920 grown-up horses. Top speed is said to be 398 km/h(247 mp/h) while the 0-100 km/h (0-62mp/h) will go away by 3.3 seconds. And the price tag? Hold on - $ 555,750!

Lotec C1000

German Lotec was started in 1962 and built racing cars for other manufacturers in many years, including Porsche. For many years they lived also in production by the styling of Mercedes models, but when an oil sheik knock'd on the door in 1990 and asked if they could build a car, was the way to supercar production short. Lotec C1000 was completed in 1995, equipped with a 5.6-liter V8 from Mercedes, and commanded 1000 horses. The price? $ 3,400,000. Available in one single copy!

Mega Monte Carlo

Italian Fulvio Ballabio began in 1989, developing his own supercar. Mega Monte Carlo. In August 1990, the finished car presented, with a V12 engine from Lamborghini under the hood. Because of the global financial crisis was only five cars built before the project was shelved two years later. A few years later appeared a new version up, this time equipped with a V12 engine from Mercedes at 495 hp. It is not known how many of this edition, that where built, but there is little doubt that the project was a failure.

Monteverdi Hai 450SS

Swiss Monteverdi was started by Peter Monteverdi, who originally was an agent for, among other things Ferrari in Switzerland in the early fifties. Beyond fifties and sixties he built several cars, and he competed in Formula 1 with a self-developed car in 1961 (he finished with zero points). In 1970 presented the enterprising fellow Hai 450SS, which would compete with the Italian super cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. The car was equipped with a seven liters V8 from Chrysler that delivered 450 horsepower, and Monteverdi was planning to build 49 copies. Unfortunately the car was too expensive with its $ 29,000, and only two prototypes were built.

Nissan R390

Nissan R390 doesn't really fit completely into this company, since this is a race car built in the street version. The rules dictated that you had to build a certain number of street legal vehicles to use the car in racing. Only two R390 was built for road use, both equipped with a V8 with two turbos. Road version can do 0-100 km/h (0-62 mp/h)in 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 350 km/h(217,5mp/h). The racing version was used in the famous 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1997, where three cars took part. Two of them had to retire, while the third went to a 12th place overall.

Tip: This and a racing version of car can be driven in Gran Turismo 4!

Vector M12

Vector Motors was started in California in the early seventies and presented its first prototype in 1972. In 1978 began the development of a production model called the W2, but there was never build anything more than one concept. In 1989 was Vector running again, this time with a model called the W8, which was produced in 17 copies. And they didn't stop there. In 1995 presented they the M12. It was equipped with a V12 engine from the Lamborghini Diablo, but because of poor sales (and subsequent payment problems) were only 14 copies produced. At least two of them are at the moment for sale and the price is not as high as the other you've seen, $ 120,000. It should be noted that the quality is highly variable..

The BMW 850CSi is a detuned version of the M8 which has never been produced and remained a prototype only. The M8 should have been built in a consequently lightweight manner in order to be a 'Ferrari-Killer'. The specially developed 550 hp engine has never been used except in the prototype - of which only one exists. But with the support of McLaren the M8 engine was transformed into the power plant of the McLaren F1 super sports car. At the time of development of the M8 there was virtually no market for such a car, so the BMW manager cancelled the project.

 

The M8-Prototype is perhaps the best-kept secret of BMW. Absolutely no one must see it or can get information, by order from the general manager himself. Questions from motorsport magazines remain unanswered as well. The car is locked away in the so-called Giftschrank, which could be translated as 'poison-storage'. According to BMW it is hidden behind lots of boxes anyway and will be destroyed in the near future as the 8 series doesn't exist any more and neither a successor.

 

The Prototype has never been road safe (even the headlights were missing as you can see in the picture) and was only loosely patched together, which is the reason why it is not presented in their museum. It's not even good for that ...says BMW.

 

Yes, the papers of an 850CSi say, it's an M8, but that's not of much use if you know what it could have been. What the S70 engine is capable of speaks for itself. See the world record run of the McLaren F1. The guys at McLaren say they could get 1000 hp at 9500 or 10000 rpm from the engine.

S70/1 about 6000 ccm 550 hp, 48V(?), M8 prototype 1990

btw, Some page says it was destroyed, but in February 2010, BMWBlog came up with this!:

 

The M8-Prototype is perhaps the best-kept secret of BMW and for the first time, BMW has unveiled the on-off car in front of journalists at the BMW Museum in Munich. Despite several false reports in the past, the M8 prototype has not been destroyed by BMW and it still exists in a special facility in Munich.

While our complete and highly detailed story is in works, here are some quick details. The M8 was equipped with a V12 prototype engine based on the S70 engine, producing around 550 horsepower.

Compared to the 850CSi, the M8 prototype was also missing the headlights. The car features dual side vents at the rear wheel.

In my eyes the Callaway is the only really forgotten one, but that's because I don't care for American car culture so I never knew of it to begin with. I imagine to someone who does none of those would really be forgotten. The TVR features on too many video games to be forgotten, however the 456 deserves to be forgotten, I'll grant you that.

He reorganized production, brought in the investors and involved Derek Bell as chairman. By 1996, selling for £70,000 each, the company only managed to sell 23 cars, a reasonable amount for a speciality car and then in 1997 the company fell into bankruptcy. The company would later return to develop a similar car called Spectre R45, which never entered production.

 

The chassis of the car is a monocoque and is made of lightweight material as of other parts of the car such as the suspension and body, which gave it the final weight of around 1250 kilograms (1.23 tons). The car is 4115 mm (13.4') in length, 1854 mm (6.0') in width, and 1092 mm (3.5') in height. The heart of the sportscar is a 4.6 litre (281 cubic inches) Ford V8 with 4 valves per cylinder which develops 360 bhp (268 kW) and 317 lb·ft (430 N·m) of torque allowing the car to reach 60 mph (100 km/h) in 4 and a half seconds and on to a top speed of 175 mph (280 km/h). The weight distribution of 42% at the front and 58% at the rear because of the mid-mounted engine makes it a very predictable car when driving it very fast. The wide tyres give plenty of grip in dry conditions. The race-style independent suspension, which is a shock absorbing unit, is fully adjustable, so as a result, it has a great ride quality and is very comfortable even at high speeds.

 

The very spacious interior of the R42 contains luxurious leather trims and neat Wilton carpets. Visibility is also very good compared to other mid-engined sportscar of that time, even of today. There is a good amount of luggage and storage space as well.

 

The R42 had a starring role in the 2000 Ian Sharp film "RPM" where it plays the prototype eco-friendly supercar that David Arquette has to steal.

What NFS game had the Spectre R42 in it? Was it some sort of console special that a lot of the old ones had? I can't remember any :confused:
