Mk7 Golf

I don't think it'll be long now until my mum switches from MK6 to MK7. She's just waiting for the new reg (63) to come out to see if VW can do any deals on a 6 month old one for her.

I test drove a Golf GT TDI 150 a couple of weeks ago, I forgot to try out the adaptive cruise control malarky though :(

If the head unit (Discover Pro) is available in Australia and can do all the cool stuff that's in the S3 with MMI Plus then this might be more my style than the S3. Of course it'll be another 13 months before the first ones arrive here and there was a 12 month waiting list on optioned Mk6 Golf R orders

Both the R and S3 are detuned here as well due to the 'hot weather climate' excuse (although we can always buy a Stage 1 tune from APR, Viezu, etc). Sure it doesn't snow here, but we tend to only go above 40 degrees once or twice a year, and I know there are European countries see temps over 30 in summer.

Under 5.0 seconds 0-100kph with a price drop from the old car, plus average fuel consumption around 6.9 l/100k - it's hard to say no to that.

I'm sure it'll be a great car, but I hate the way it looks, the GTI looks way better imho, cleaner. Those quad exhaust tips don't fit the car's character, this isn't a damn 500HP V8 powered car.Don't get me wrong, love the Golf 7, I just can't imagine ever going near a Golf 7 R and saying: "Wow, that's a nice hatchback", while the Megane RS, Astra VXR do offer that.I'm only curious if this is going to compete against the regular hot-hatches or a step higher, as in the M135i and A45 AMG.

Agreed on the aesthetics. The exhaust tips really don't flow with the rest of the car and its sharp lines - trapezoid tips would be better I think.

Prices on the German market.

Golf R: 38.325 €

S3: 39.200 €

M135i: 39.850 €

M135ixA (:ew:): 44.000 €

A 45 AMG: 49.682 €

GTI Performance: 29.825 €

So, I think the R competes with the M-lite, S3... and if you overlook the price, the A 45 too. All of them are over 300 hp and the M135i can be AWD as well. But no doubt the RS 3 will come to the market in few years and that, in my opinion, will be the closest VAG's rival to the MB and BMW.

Best bang for the buck? M135i.

Problem is in Australia the prices are different, which is why the Golf R is a good prospect down here. Mk7 pricing is unknown here but rumored to be cheaper than the Mk6. The Performance Edition GTI is also said to be coming next year whereas the normal GTI arrives in a few weeks. The old S3 and RS3, while capable, was noted to be a bit boring, whereas the BMW is more fun but has less gadgets to play with. The A45 is the fastest, has good tech, and fun to drive but costs a fortune. So we come back to VW. Sure it doesn't look like a boy-racer Renault but honestly I wouldn't want something that did.

Mk6 GTI: $42,000

Mk6 Golf R: $48,000

2014 Audi S3: $59,900

M135i: $68,000 (+tick a few boxes and this will jump up very quickly)

AMG A45:: $74,900
