  1. 1. Do You Think The World Will End in 2012

Scientific experts from around the world are genuinely predicting that five years from now, all life on Earth could well finish. Some are saying it'll be humans that set it off. Others believe that a natural phenomenon will be the cause. And the religious folks are saying it'll be God himself who presses the stop button...

1. Mayan Calendar

The first mob to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things:

Building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone and

Sacrificing Virgins.

Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the Earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it's likely they've got the end of the world right as well.

2. Sun Storms

Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made a startling discovery: our sun is in a bit of strife. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic, and it's supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the Earth with so much radiation energy, it's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse, and calculations suggest it'll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012

3. The Atom Smasher

Scientists in Europe have been building the world's largest particle accelerator. Basically its a 27km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the Universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it's properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They're predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.

4. The Bible says...

If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn't bad enough, religious folks are getting in on the act aswell. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between Good an Evil, has been set down for 2012. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings.

5. Super Volcano

Yellowstone National Park in the United States is famous for its thermal springs and Old Faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple - it's sitting on top of the world's biggest volcano, and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats. The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we're many years overdue for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and plunging the Earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years. The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily, and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang.

6. The Physicists

This one's case of bog-simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berekely Uni have been crunching the numbers. and they've determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they're claiming their calculations prove, that we're all going to die, very soon - while also saying their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 percent- and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.

7. Slip-Slop-Slap-BANG!

We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that sheilds us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so - and right now we're about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches.

Should be an interesting Topic to debate.

Nope

Its all a bunch Of Codswallop, Do you know how many times this has been predicted in the past?, Lets just say a few times

Also, Have you noticed that all these things that are predicted are a couple of thousand years overdue, and every single one of them points to 2012

Well, I think thats laughable (pity laugh)

Well, If its true, Ill be Happy watching the London Olympics :D

(this is my opinion, I am in no way forcing my opinion as a fact, or Saying its better than anyone elses, Before WWX starts)

There's an 8th known as Planet X and a lot of people think that this 2012 prediction by the Mayans is when something big changes in the orbit of the earth not as was thought before, the end of the world.

Let's just say if the date says 22nd December 2012 there will be a lot of sighs of relief.

Uhhh no... Thats a lie. The bible says that only God knows when the world will end and If the 2 lables of the apocolypse dont happen until 2012 then forget about the world ending that year. Whe are still on the 5th lable (But thats actually really close to the end cause theres 7 lables). But I still doubt that it will end in 2012

Humans, always trying to predict something they cant

Ah the Large Hadron Collider. What a weird piece of kit. I really do want to meet the man who thought making black holes on Earth was a good idea.

Oh, and if the world were crushed into a black hole, in theory it would be smaller than a basketball. What is known as a Singularity, which basically is an infinite amount of mass compressed into an infinitely small space (we humans cannot imagine how small this 'one' is. It is just a single point...)

No-one can judge when a volcano can go off. Yellowstone is over due but people have no idea when its going off.

People have probably interpreted the Mayan Calendar wrongly, who knows to be honest.

Sun Storms, they'll probably blame these on global warming soon. This has most probably happened many times before but they have only picked up on it now.

“The Atom Smasher”, this is something I'm very interested in. Chemistry is kinda my subject that I'm most interested in and this thing is brilliant. There is one in the US at the moment that's a lot smaller but a similar kinda thing. It fuse's two atoms together, usually hydrogen isotopes I think, this just forms a helium isotope and a lot of energy. How is that going to make a back hole? A black hole is stars that have clasped into a small space so there is no space in the atoms so it is immensely dense, there isn't enough particles on earth to create one, no where near. Takes a little more than the fusion of a few atoms to create on of these.Thats my understanding anyway, gunna go and read up on it now.

Anyway no is my awnser, no-one knows.

i say no...its complete bull...notice how its the year where London gets the olympic games? and how its on the winter solstice? and how religion is 'always right'? why do i get the feeling that this is a load of bull and that they made these ideas to scare everyone

(soz bout language but its my opinion, plus i didnt say full phrase so there :P)

Reason 8:

London is hosting the Olympic Games that year, that CAN'T be good. :)

Seriously though, this has been pondered all the time, remember the 'the world will end in March '04' thing, yeah, that went well.

I'm saying rubbish, but if the world DOES end in 2012 feel free to PM me thousands of facepalm pictures.

Oh, wait...

Sun storms are the thing that eco-mentalists don't want to talk about. Its the proof against global warming. :p

And your understanding of science (and all of ours), lets be honest, is probably not going to be the same as someone entrusted with billions of monies to make a huge tunnel underground of Europe...

And yeah, if it does end anytime during our lifetimes, then, assuming it will be something pretty catastrophic, like the things in this thread, then it'll all be too quick for us to notice. If it isn't, there's always doing those things you would never normally do. No, more extreme than that.
