Who wants to take part in some retro gaming?

Every year without fail, EA release a new NFS game, and we all bang on about how much better the old games were (or something like that anyway) ;)

Well, I propose that we stop talking about these old games and start playing them, and then talk about them even more and share pics and videos just like they were released last week.

I'm open to ideas, but my suggestion was to have some sort of schedule for upcoming retro games we'd like to play, giving members enough time to try and find these games (I won't judge how you get them since they won't be at your nearest game shop, however don't discuss illegal acquisitions here). You might also find them on eBay or perhaps a specialist Retro gaming shop).

Each game on the schedule could be focussed on for 2-4 weeks, during which time we'd start the career modes from scratch, share pics/videos, race online (where possible), share instructions on how to get the games working on modern PCs if necessary, etc. For those with not-so-great PCs, this could be a great chance to play with us too.

Post your feedback and suggestions in this thread. We can then start new threads for each retro game we play (with a 'Retro Gaming' prefix in the thread title). For starters we'd probably play the early Need for Speed games, starting from 2 or 3 and going up to at least Porsche Unleashed. We'd probably stick with car/racing games first but then if you want you can re-explore other genre's afterwards. Let me know if you're seriously interested in participating and I'll form a list of names below.

Yes, these games are old and buying them these days might be hard, but please keep discussions about illegal ways of acquiring them to yourselves. *cough* ;)

I'm all up for playing these games (especially the NFS series) again, I have most of them and can probably find other ones as well. School at the moment though won't let me spend massive amounts of time on playing through career modes again but come Christmas or other holidays I will have more time. :D I will definitely be sharing screenshots though.

Not sure what people think, but we could try using IPLounge to race online in NFS Road Challenge (which I have and it works for me, though it might be a bit hard to set up and get working) and Porsche (never tried it myself). Tell me what you think, it was just a suggestion.

Also, the original Driver might be a bit too retro, but it was the only thing I could come up with. :cheeky:

Quick question: Would you prefer to order the games according to series (i.e all the NFS games, then Test Drive, etc), or would you prefer to go in order of year (roughly)? I've got a feeling the first TD came out before the first NFS btw, but just in case you want to keep the graphics improvements progressive rather than jumping all over the place.

If I might make some suggestions for the PS1 tier?

Gran Turismo 2 Sim mode

Ridge Racer Type 4

Micro Machines V3

That is all I can think of for now.

Bearing in mind these are my fave games from the era I started gaming in so mind your criticisms, I might take them personally, even if I don't mean to.

Milli and I have been playing NFS1 on a PSX emulator, and Ozzmcom tried to install the PC version unsuccessfully, but the game averaged a retro review score of 7.4/10 (pretending it's 1994). Now we'll more onto NFS 2. If you've got it, great, if not, you're welcome to find the PC or PSX version of it. On PC, look for the SE version as it supports 3DFX (will assist you in getting it working on modern PCs) and has an extra car + track.
