Well ETS2 is one of the easier games to mod since its structure in base has remained identical to the very first 18 Wheels of Steel games. Map mods come in many shapes and sizes... somebody just has to open The Crew and modify the map to import it in ETS2 :D

Perhaps lets see if SCS themselves might already take a step in the ''right'' direction with American Truck Simulator. I just wish ETS would sometimes allow to go offroad a little further down the trails than it does now with those invisible walls.

SCS Software's blog: Beta: Euro Truck Simulator 2 update 1.16 - Going 64-bit!

ets2_64bit.jpg

Update highlights:

64-bit version of the game is now available via Steam launcher

Large truck dealers have been updated to match the new style of dealerships

The focus of the upcoming official 1.16 game update is to ship engine changes and other behind the scenes elements in preparation for our big future content updates.

64-bit version of the game is currently accessible in beta on Steam, it will be available as a regular game update for all users soon.

Full update notes can be found in Steam discussions.

We have prepared a short set of questions and answers about this change:

How will 64-bit executable affect your game?

64-bit executable is a purely under-the-hood technical change and should have no negative effect on how your game ecosystem works - all your saves, modifications, trucks, and input methods will work just as they used to before.

Why are you releasing the 64-bit executable?

Memory footprint of our game has been increasing over time with our expanding game world, new features and countless modifications for the players to choose from. The 64-bit executable will allow the game to access the entire physical memory of your computer and avoid out-of-memory crashes related to 32-bit memory limitations. Most modern PCs these days ship with considerably more memory, often 6-8 GB or more, and this memory could not be used with a 32-bit binary, where the limit was only 4 GB or even 2GB in case of 32-bit systems. The 32-bit game has been essentially starving for memory while several spare Gigs of memory were idling in the operating system.

What are the benefits of this change?

Using the new executable should alleviate memory related issues you may have experienced in the past - many users have already reported problems with memory limitations after installing large collections of modifications. Even for a game with no mods installed, with more textures and 3D assets cached in memory, the framerate should stay more stable during long play sessions.

Map creators will have a smoother experience in the map editor as you'll have way more memory at your disposal.

I have a 32-bit OS. Can I somehow use the 64-bit executable?

Unfortunately not - 64-bit executable can only be used on 64-bit operating system. If you are serious about playing ETS2 extensively, we highly recommend you to consider upgrading your 32-bit operating system to 64-bit version at this point.

Are you planning to keep supporting 32-bit executable after this update?

Yes. We are are not dropping it suddenly, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the game will be maintained and kept in sync for a considerable period of time. We've actually included several engine changes into 1.16 that are focused on improving memory management also for the 32-bit version so that all of our users can enjoy Euro Truck Simulator 2.

The 1.16 update also features minor map changes as we continue to update truck dealer locations to match the dealership revamp we have shipped in our previous update. Please note that this change may affect game modifications, so if you are experiencing crashes first try disabling any map modifications you have installed.

Everybody loves new stuff and we are aware that our fans are impatiently waiting for the release of the goodies that we have been covering on this blog. Admittedly, from this point of view ETS2 1.16 doesn't bring much to the table. This update mostly serves as a wide-scale stress-test for the new tech to come. Meanwhile though, our ETS2 mapping team is putting finishing touches to DLC Scandinavia, while the vehicle team is doing solid progress on the long-awaited Mercedes-Benz New Actros truck model. Cool stuff is on the way! We cannot yet predict which will come out first, but both teams are racing each other to finish their task as soon as possible. And that's just Euro Truck 2, and you know that's not the only project we are working on.

How can I join the beta?

Right-click on Euro Truck Simulator 2 in your Steam library and select properties.

Switch to the BETAS tab.

Select public_beta in the dropdown.

And now Mac has also got its version of ETS2, being the third OS after Windows and Linux.

apple_ets2.jpg

We are happy to announce the availability of Euro Truck Simulator 2 on Mac OS X via the Steam platform.

Making our game engine work on Mac was quite challenging, as the engine and game code for both ETS2 and ATS is constantly evolving. This process took us longer than we originally anticipated, we have been hinting that the Mac version is coming for longer than we are comfortable to admit, but finally we have achieved the important milestone of supporting Windows, Linux as well as Mac. Reaching this point means that we will be able to maintain and update all editions based on shared codebase, making the probability of ATS appearing on all three platforms simultaneously very high.

We are launching the Mac edition of the game on Steam for now, and honestly we are not quite sure yet when or if we will offer it through the Mac App Store. Steam allows us to release updates anytime we feel they are ready, the current DLC system will "just work" there as well, and with a bit of fiddling, people should be able to use any mods that are out there already for the Windows version. Applications from Mac App Store operate in a sandbox, making it more challenging to make mods work. Another obstacle is the QA process, it would tend to delay update releases for unknown periods of time, making it difficult to keep our game in sync on all supported platforms. With planned features on World of Trucks, keeping the client and the server in sync through protocol changes will be critical.

Just like the Windows and Linux version, the OS X version is available on the Steam Store starting today. Check out our step-by-step guide if you are unsure how to activate your game or if you have no idea what the entire Steam thing is! If you have already activated the game on Steam and have been running it under Linux or Windows, of course there is no need to re-purchase it. Any product key that we have issued in the past will activate the game on Steam, so even if you already own or are about to buy any boxed retail Windows edition of the game, you can access the Mac and Linux versions immediately.

Yup, nice updates so far, but... *waits for Scandinavia DLC*

Here you go (almost):

As we are getting closer to the finish line on ETS2 Scandinavia DLC, it's time to show you more of what we have in store for you. Here is a small scale map to reveal the destination cities we are putting into this world expansion. This little map doesn't tell the whole story - the highways, roads and city streets are now a much more detailed system than what we currently have in the older parts of our ETS2 universe.

scan_expansion_map.jpg

We have dedicated a lot of time and attention to recreating Scandinavian sights and landmarks in order to make the scenery more vibrant and lifelike. We tried hard to distill the looks and sights of the region to stay true to its spirit, and in the process created a lot of new assets to make driving more varied and the exploration more interesting.

hardanger.jpg

fedafjorden.jpg

The scenery is additionally supplemented with new delivery types and unique locations such as Scania and Volvo Trucks factories. Since ferry transport plays important role in this area, Scandinavia DLC also will feature numerous ports and deliveries aimed at supporting those locations.

It looks great, but they sort of confirmed the ''issue'': the rest of the map now looks outdated and too equal compared to scandinavia.

Yup and I don't think they're gonna do much about the rest of the map which hasn't been changed at all since ETS1 days IIRC. Those frigging Autobahn lanes that suddenly change to ramp are driving me crazy.

Yes it's the most annoying thing >.< Looking forward to ATS though.

Let's take a look at Örebro today - one of Swedish cities that is pretty much finished and ready for Scandinavia DLC. We hope that you will appreciate that we are borrowing from reality as much as we can; the locals should definitely recognize some of the sights below.

orebro_04.jpg

As we are switching into high gear in the final tuning and tweaking of the new DLC, you can now expect a lot more media from our virtual Scandinavia covering the places of interest. There is so much to explore there! Don't worry, even if we plan to show quite a lot here in the coming weeks, way more will be left for you to discover on your own!

SCS takes a closer look at the Telemetry SDK.

Today we would like to talk about something that deviates a bit from the typical posts you see on our blog - we want to shine some light on our Telemetry SDK library and examples of its use for Euro Truck Simulator 2 (the same SDK will be available for American Truck Simulator from day one).

ets2_telemetry_sdk_0.jpg

You're probably asking yourself what is that Telemetry thing and what does it really do? The SDK gives modders an easy to use API which grants access to a set of in-game data such as (but not limited to): truck make and model, speed, current gear, map coordinates, current job info, engine RPM, acceleration forces and many more similar stats about your game. All of this data can be used to create various modifications related to the game or even to create a more immersive experience.

The SDK available here requires programming knowledge to use, but our community has already created a number of various projects using our SDK. Let's have a look at some of them:

Telemetry Web Server and Mobile Dashboard

ets2_telemetry_sdk_1.jpg

This fan-made add-on gives the player an opportunity to see in-game status via a web page in a browser on a local network. In practice, this means that your tablet or smartphone can serve you as a mobile dashboard display showing your gauges as well as essential trip info, giving you a chance to keep the main screen less cluttered.

Enhanced Force Feedback for Logitech devices

ets2_telemetry_sdk_2.jpg

Logitech wheel users may like how this rather technical plugin gives them an ability to achieve enhanced force feedback. This plugin will make your wheel act differently from standard game by adding a compensation for various features seen in modern trucks and a wide set of different responses to when your truck is being driven under more demanding conditions. Author of this mod also offers a set of improvements for gear shifting and transmission - check out the thread above for more information.

Enhanced Truck Sounds

ets2_telemetry_sdk_3.jpg

Enthusiasts of roaring engines will appreciate this add-on delivering a louder set of engine and truck noises right into your game, as the aim of this modification is to provide a different take on realistic driving experience by enhancing the game with additional sounds based off truck performance and behavior derived from the telemetry data.

G19 LCD display

ets2_telemetry_sdk_4.jpg

This add-on, just like you may have guessed from its name, allows display of various gameplay information using LCD display of your G19 keyboard working similarly as the mobile dashboard mentioned above.

To get started

If you want to get started be sure to check our modding section to download the latest TELEMETRY SDK.

Also you may want to check fan-created GitHub repository containing a live implementation of the API that will help you in getting started creating your own add-ons and plugins for Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Let us know in the comments if you know and like any other telemetry-based projects we have failed to discover ourselves!

Are they going to release the DLC one jpg at a time or something?

Oslo happens to be one of the largest urban agglomerations featured in Scandinavia DLC, in fact Oslo and the surrounding areas is possibly the largest city we have built so far in Euro Truck Simulator 2.

As you can see in the screenshots below, we are using new types of junctions and intersections extensively in Scandinavia, in this particular case to connect the city to the large port that incorporates a ferry terminal.

Oslo itself is filled with several smaller loading docks in different districts of the city located a couple of kilometers away from each other. There are so many opportunities for exploration!
